Memorial Day weekend is upon us and it is going to be a little “sporty” this weekend.

Weather has been wet and windy, but we are still catching fish. The bluefish are still here in full force.

The Cape Henlopen fishing pier has been a hot spot when the water is up in the flats. Anglers are seeing blitzes like they have never seen before with large schools moving into the area. Just use mullet and bunker chunks if you are throwing bait, otherwise spoons and poppers are the lures of choice.

These fish are hungry now and will hit anything. Green is still the best color in the surf, and that action is good but locations and times are random. The blues are up to the ten pound range, but smaller fish are being caught readily.

Black drum are still hitting along the Delaware Bay beaches. Clam, peeler crab, sand fleas, or shrimp are the best baits. The boats are hitting them in the Delaware Bay near the coral beds off slaughter beach and those areas. Even those beaches are seeing some action.

Kingfish are decent action in the surf if you can keep the blues off your gear. top and bottom rigs with fishbites, bloodworms, clam, or squid is producing catches. That is also attracting skates and dogfish.

Crabbing has been great around the Inland Bays and I am sure this weekend the amount of crab pots will be up by a hundred times. We will be able to walk across the bay without getting our feet wet buoy hopping. There re plenty of crabs out there so I wouldn’t be too concerned.

Striped bass action for migratory bass is good at Assateague Island and fair along Delaware beaches. Bait of choice has been bunker. You definitely have to put in the time to produce any catches. Look behind or under bluefish schools.

The Oceanic pier has seen some striped bass action mostly at night. Short bass action around the inland bays is decent if you can get away from the bluefish, which are feasting on them heavily.

Flounder action was great in the canal for the flounder tournament. Minnows and gulp have been the best baits. Drifting in boats or jigging along the bottom has produced the most catches. Some weakfish have been caught by anglers while flounder fishing. You could jig for them with pink Zoom soft plastics on a two ounce jig head.

Sea bass action has been great for the boats headed offshore. Boats are limiting out in no time. Get in on the action and hire a charter boat, or hit up a head boat.

Freshwater has been great despite the rains. The waters are a little stirred up especially in the creeks and the wind hasn’t helped but fish are still hitting.
