At Friday’s event a new Harriet Tubman Byway sign on South Main Street in Camden was unveiled. The Tubman Byway roadway signs are slated to mark Harriet Tubman’s route through Delaware, from its entrance at the Maryland border into the First State at Sandtown, north through Kent and New Castle counties, and exiting into Pennsylvania where Del. 52 crosses the Pennsylvania state line. CAMDEN - The U.S. Small Business Administration partnered with Delaware and local leaders to launch the Tubman Byway Initiative in Kent County Friday with the unveiling of a sign at the 102 S. Main St. in Camden.

The Tubman Byway is a roadway designation marking some of abolitionist Harriet Tubman’s documented movements leading fugitive slaves from Maryland’s Eastern Shore to free states in the North before the Civil War. The initiative is a pilot program that works with small businesses along the byway to promote incentives to those traveling the route.

Camden and Wyoming businesses participating include the Delaware Bay Trading Company and General Lockwood’s Coffee House, Knight’s Fine Jewelry and Yarn and Bone Pet Supply Co.
