Bucs, Mergner blank CR for 7th straight win

Milford High erupted for seven first-inning runs before going on to an 11-0 win over Caesar Rodney in Henlopen North baseball on Thursday afternoon.

Alex Mergner allowed only one hit and struck out eight to earn his second-straight five-inning shutout for the Buccaneers (7-1), who won their seventh game in a row.

Mitch Leighty had three of Milford’s five hits while Shawn Saxon and Mason Morris added three RBI apiece.

Jacob Armstrong had CR’s lone hit.

Sussex Tech 4, Cape Henlopen 2: The Ravens rallied for three runs in the top of the seventh to top the Vikings in a Henlopen North showdown of unbeaten teams.

Jonathan Stokley (2 run), who doubled in the seventh, and Jaryn Sample both had two hits for Sussex Tech. Reliever Grant Allen earned the win.

Cape starter Josh Reinhold struck out 11 and didn’t allow an earned run in six innings. Justin Marsh had a pair of doubles, a walk, and a run scored.

Delmarva Christian 5, Salisbury Christian 3: Winning pitcher Carter Breasure struck out seven in four innings and also hit a two-run homer for the Royals.

Chase Hesson and Riley Culver also hit back-to-back doubles and Andreas Caruso added a pair of hits.

Delcastle 13, First State Military 1: Daniel Smith homered for the Bulldogs in the loss in a game played at Smyrna-Clayton Little League.

Girls’ soccer

Caesar Rodney 8, Milford 1: Jada McCullough netted three goals and an assist as the Riders picked up a Henlopen North win.

Gabrielle Davis (2 assists), Madelyn Reed (1 assist), Allyson Durham and Kate Benson also scored for CR with Gabrielle DiBartola making four saves. The Riders out-shot Milford, 18-7.

Lila Mergner scored a second-half goal for Milford while Shana smith made seven saves.

Smyrna 3, Appoquinimink 2, OT: Kelly Barr’s goal in the 94th minute lifted the Eagles (5-1) to the overtime win.

Hannah Osborne and Jade Balon (1 assist) scored first-half goals for Smyrna while Cheyenne Donaghue assisted on the game-winner.

Sussex Tech 3, Cape Henlopen 1: Hannah Murphy tallied all three goals, including two in the first half, for the Ravens.

Sussex Tech finished with advantages of 9-1 in shots and 7-2 in corner kicks.

Giselle Garcia scored for the Vikings, who got six saves from Julie Heffernan.

Indian River 9, Seaford 2: Isabella Scurci, Isabella Binko and Anastasia Diakos all scored twice in the first half to pace the Indians.

IR, which out-shot the Blue Jays 15-5, tallied seven of its goals before halftime.

Cailee Layton and Jillian Breitenbach scored for Seaford.

Delmar 2, Laurel 0: Taylor Tull and Maci Bradford netted goals in the Wildcats’ South win.

Kelley Davis made 16 saves for Delmar, which held advantages of 22-13 in shots and 5-0 in corner kicks.

The Bulldogs’ Destine Snead made 11 saves.

Sussex Academy 8, Woodbridge 0: Katherine Portillo tallied four of the Seahawks’ five first-half goals in the Henlopen South victory.

Softball

Sussex Central 4, Dover 0: Madge Layfield pitched a three-hitter with 17 strikeouts in the Golden Knights’ North victory.

Central’s Katelyn Evick homered with Kate Evick and McKenna Boyle both contributing two hits.

The Senators turned three double plays in the game.

Sussex Tech 6, Cape Henlopen 3: The Ravens scored three runs in the top of the seventh to break a 3-3 tie.

Kylie Kruger pitched the final two innings to earn the win for Sussex Tech, which also scored three runs in the third.

Marissa Frederick struck out 10 and doubled for the Vikings.

Caesar Rodney 3, Milford 2: The Riders scored the final three runs of the game, including one in the seventh, to improve to 7-0.

Catcher Stacey Deputy had a pair of hits with Payton Shields pitching a five-hitter.

Lillie Harrison and Haleigh Baker both had multiple hits for Milford.

Laurel 6, Delmar 0: Kaegen Brittingham collected three hits for the Bulldogs (6-3), who won their third game in a row.

Makenzie Whaley, who homered, Couri Smith and Bailey Ullman all added two hits with Kylee Hill pitched a four-hitter.

Delmar’s Camryn Wingate had a pair of hits.

Lake Forest 30, Early College 0: Skylar Copio pitched a five-inning perfect game with 13 strikeouts as well as going 5-for-6 at the plate.

Girls’ lacrosse

Cape Henlopen 20, Padua 3: The Vikings built a 14-2 halftime lead before earning the non-conference victory.

Carrie Clausius (1 assist), Ella Rishko (1 assist) and Molly Mendes (2 assists) all netted three goals for Cape, which out-shot the Pandas, 23-6.
