Blue Hens earn program’s first CAA baseball championship
WILMINGTON, N.C. — Behind a nine run first inning, the University of Delaware baseball program earned its first Colonial Athletic Association Tournament title Saturday afternoon at Brooks Field.
In the opening frame, the Blue Hens (33-21) sent 14 batters to plate, recording the nine runs on six hits. During the inning, Delaware chased both UNCW (30-29) starter Luke Geselle as well as Seahawks reliever Chris Joyner. Geselle went just one-third of inning and faced just five batters.
In the victory, Delaware received seven brilliant innings from Kyle Hinton, who allowed just one run. Hinton, who pitched for the second consecutive day, earned a spot on the All-CAA Tournament team. Yesterday, Hinton pitched two and two-thirds innings.
The Blue Hens received a pair of hits from Nick Patten and Doug Trimble. Trimble scored twice, while Patten went two-for-three with two runs batted in.
After Delaware allowed a lead-off home run to Casey Golden, the Blue Hens bats came alive in the first. Kevin Mohollen, who batted twice in the first frame, led off with a single. He later scored on Calvin Scott’s RBI single.

After Diaz Nardo brought home another run on a ground out, second baseman Nick Tierno drove home a pair, giving UD a 5-1 lead. The Hens’ struck for another run when Jordan Glover was hit by a pitch. The seventh run of the inning came across on a two-out error, before Patten capped the inning with a two-run single.

Overall, six Blue Hens earned all-tournament honors. Patten, Hinton, Glover, Brian Mayer and Ron Marinaccio earned the honors, while shortstop Jeremy Ake earned the CAA Tournament MVP.
For the four-days Delaware led the tournament in average (.308) and ERA (2.75). Delaware allowed just 11 earned runs and trailed for just three and a half innings all tournament long. The Blue Hens outscored opponents 38-14 over the four days.
