Delaware’s football coaching search remained in limbo on Monday evening.

According to a story in the Richmond Times-Dispatch, Richmond coach Danny Rocco was meeting with UR officials on Monday night.

Believed to be the frontrunner for the Blue Hens’ job, Rocco also planned to meet with Delaware officials duirng the day.

The Times-Dispatch quoted a press release from Richmond athletic director Keith Gill saying that discussions with Rocco are still ongoing.

“We continue to confirm with him Richmond’s commitment to maintaining our winning football tradition,” the statement read. “Our football program is very strong and (President Ronald A. Crutcher) and I are committed to maintaining the success and winning tradition of Spider football.”

The 56-year-old Rocco has led the Spiders to three straight appearances in the NCAA Division I FCS playoffs, including a trip to the national semifinals two years ago. Richmond went 10-4 this past season, which ended with a 38-0 loss at Eastern Washington in the FCS quarterfinals on Saturday.

Delaware has been without a full-time head coach since Oct. 16 when it fired fourth-year coach Dave Brock. The Hens have gone 4-7 each of the last two seasons, the program’s first back-to-back losing campaigns since 1939.

Wesley’s Shade wins award: For the second consecutive season, a Wesley College football player has been selected as the Brooks Irvine Club Division III Player of the Year.

Wide receiver Bryce Shade earned the South Jersey honor after an outstanding senior year helping the Wolverines to their 12th straight NCAA Tournament appearance.

Shade follows Wesley alum Joe Callahan, who won the award last season.

Shade finished the year with 63 catches for 1,058 yards and 10 receiving touchdowns. The wide receiver also ran for a touchdown, gaining 117 yards on 21 carries this season.

Shade finished his career ranked second in career receiving yards in Wesley history with a 3,342.

College basketball

Wesley’s Brinkley honored: Wesley College senior Rasahn Brinkley was named the Capital Athletic Conference Player of the Week after notching 19 points and 15 rebounds in a, 80-59 comeback victory over Frostburg State on Sunday.

Trailing by four points at halftime, Brinkley provided a spark off the bench, tallying 13 points and 10 rebounds in the second half to help the Wolverines to a 21-point victory. Brinkley also added two assists, two steals and one block in the CAC win.

Hens’ Daly gets CAA award: Delaware freshman guard Ryan Daly was named the Colonial Athletic Association Men’s Basketball Rookie of the Week on Monday.

Daly led all scorers with a career-high 20 points in the Blue Hens’ 81-63 setback at Yale, going 7-of-15 from the field and hitting a career-best five three-pointers. He also grabbed a career-high nine rebounds, second most on the team, to go with two assists and two steals in 30 minutes of action.

DSU’s Pollard receives honor: NaJai Pollard’s 10-rebound, five-block performance against NJIT has earned the Delaware State sophomore another Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference award.

Pollard was selected as the MEAC Women’s Basketball Defensive Player of the Week for her efforts in the Hornets’ loss to the Highlanders. She also scored a team-high 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field in the contest.

For the season, Pollard is second in the MEAC in scoring at 18.8 points per game and is the league’s No. 1 rebounder at 9.9 per contest.

Football

Gatorade honors Smyrna’s Henderson: Smyrna High quarterback Nolan Henderson has been named the Gatorade Player of the Year for the state.

The 6-foot, 175-pound senior passed for 2,331 yards and 32 touchdowns this past season, leading the Eagles to a perfect 12-0 record and their second consecutive Division I state championship. Henderson completed 123 of 200 passes and was intercepted just five times.

He was a first-team All-State selection as a junior and was named to the 2015 USA TODAY’s ALL-USA Delaware first team.

“Nolan Henderson is just a great player,” said Sussex Tech coach Mark Quillin. “He’s got great command of their offense. He can make plays with his feet or his arm and he has the ability to hit receivers that are covered.”

Henderson has verbally committed to play football at Delaware.

Boys’ basketball

Col. Richardson 44, Delmar 35: The Wildcats dropped the nonconference decision in a game played on Monday.

Girls’ basketball

Delmarva Christian 43, Holly Grove 19: Elizabeth Stevens netted 14 points and Camryn Breasure had 11 to pace the Royals to the victory.
