Delaware State’s Chris Gonzales connects for an RBI double in the first inning of Wednesday’s game against Delaware.[/caption] The University of Delaware was able to establish state bragging rights Wednesday as the Blue Hens defeated Delaware State 12-7 in a nonleague contest. After Delaware State (6-20) jumped out to a two-run lead in the first inning, the Hens (12-12) scored three runs in the second and third innings. UD then added another two runs in the fourth to take control of the game. Wild pitches and errors from Delaware State aided the Hens’ scoring efforts in the second and a Ty Warrington RBI double highlighted their offensive output in the third. Tyler Powell, Greg Olenski, and Brock Niggebrugge supplied the offense for UD in the fourth as the trio each batted in a run in the frame. Joe Giacchino provided his 14th RBI of the season and Warrington scored on a wild pitch in the sixth inning. Zach Lopes then capped the UD scoring with an RBI single to give the Hens a 12-7 advantage. Giacchino led the Blue Hens with three RBI in the winning effort, while Powell had a team-high three hits. The Hornets tallied nine total hits in the loss. Cameron Onderko, Devin Beverly, and Chris Gonzalez led Delaware State with two hits each. Colman Vila made his second career start Wednesday and the freshman pitched two innings and allowed four earned runs. Andrew Pechstein pitched the third and fourth innings before Eric Sawyer came on in relief and tossed three innings to earn his first win of the season. Cameron Onderko led the way for the Hornets with a 2-for-4 output at the plate, in addition to totaling two RBI. College lacrosse WOMEN, Delaware State 18, District of Columbia 4: Delaware State’s quest for it’s first-ever women’s lacrosse victory ended with a rout of District of Columbia at Alumni Stadium. The Hornets scored the first eight  goals of the game and never looked back in the historic conquest. A total of 10 Delaware State players scored in the contest. Emily Etkins and Kayla Yurkanin led the way with three goals each, while Sierra Harris, Nicole McCombs, Iman Hassan and Brionna Watkins collected two each. The Hornets set team records for goals and shots in a game. DSU (1-12) needed just 65 seconds to open the scoring. Hassan beat UDC goal keeper Dani Falco for an unassisted score to give the Hornets a 1-0 lead. Etkins notched her first goal of the game just 29 seconds later to put DSU ahead 2-0. After winning its third straight draw, Yurkanin scored off an assist from Lauren Parry to stretch the lead to 3-0 at the 28:14 mark of the opening period. Yurkanin made it two scores in a row with an unassisted goal less than 30 seconds later. McCombs got into the scoring column for the first time to give the Hornets a 5-0 lead with 27:14 remaining in the first period. DSU opened up a 6-0 advantage when Perry scored her 11th goal of the season later in the period. She also had two assists in the game to give her 13 points for year, tying for second place on the team. Etkins raised her scoring total to 20 for the season, tying the school record she first set in 2014. Yurkanin has 10 goals and 13 points, while Miranda Hawkins scored her 10th goal of the season in the contest. Delaware State’s previous high for goals in a game was 16 vs. Presbyterian last season. Marymount 15, Wesley 8: Despite a career-high four goals by Kaitlyn Ennis, the Wolverines at Marymount in a Capital Athletic Conference contest. Both teams are now 4-8 overall while the Wolverines fall to 0-5 in the CAC compared to the Saints’ 2-3 mark. Ennis’ four points matched her season-high while Kaitlin Brennan (2 goals) and Jessica Giaccone (1 goal, 1 assist) also had multi-point efforts. Ennis also had a team-high four ground balls, along with Rodneisha Scott and Mckenzie Marvel, and four draw controls. Giaccone and Summer Stone also caused three turnovers. MEN, York 13, Wesley 6: The Wolverines fall to 5-6 overall and 0-5 in the CAC while the Spartans improve to 8-5 with a 4-1 mark in league play. Less than three minutes into the game, Nate Gemmato put Wesley on top with a score of the unassisted variety, however, York scored four-straight to close out the period and the first two goals of the second to take a 6-1 lead. Before the end of the half, Sam Seibert and Joe Fingles were able to find the back of the net but the Wolverines trailed, 8-3 at the half.  Devin Hyatt scored midway through the third but Wesley, who were playing very shorthanded, was unable to cut into the deficit and was down by eight going into the final period. James Moss and Fingles on assists from John Chenault and Alex Skidmore helped the Wolverines outscore York, 2-1, over the final 15 minutes but the discrepancy was too much to overcome. Josh Dean made 12 saves in goal along with a team-high six ground ball. College softball Delaware 9, Monmouth 5: The Blue Hens the first game of its doubleheader at Monmouth before the second game was called due to darkness. The Blue Hens (20-13) were leading 13-1 through two innings when the game was called, so the result and all statistics from the contest will not count. The opener remained scoreless until the top of the fourth inning, when Mariah Kondravy crushed a solo home run to left field. Kondravy now has a team-leading seven homers this season, including five in the last six games. However Monmouth (7-14) answered right back in the bottom half, as Rachel Shotzbarger led off with a single and eventually scored on an RBI groundout by Raelynn Galindo. But the Blue Hens went back in front for good in the fifth when Leanna Gearhart opened the frame with a triple and immediately crossed the plate on a single up the middle by Jessica Grisler. The triple was Gearhart’s eighth of the season, tying her for the Division I lead along with LSU’s A.J. Andrews. Carolyn Szymanski improved to 14-7 in the circle after allowing four runs in six innings of work, before Jordan Cargile gave up one run in the seventh.
