Basketball state tourney cancelled

DOVER - The news that everyone expected but nobody wanted to hear in the Delaware high school basketball world finally came this afternoon when the DIAA announced that the remaining two rounds in both the boys' and girls' state tournaments have been cancelled.

The DIAA made the announcement around 4:25 p.m. after Gov. John Carney declared a state of emergency.

Dover was slated to face St. Andrews with Sanford playing Appoquinimink in the boys' semifinals with Cape Henlopen taking on Sanford and St. Elizabeth playing Conrad in the girls' semis. The Unified state finals between Caesar Rodney and Dover was also called off.

Earlier in the day, the DIAA had decided that the contests would be played on Friday with only limited attendance permitted. But more and more pro and college leagues made cancellations during the day to help try to stop the spread of the Coronavirus.

Both Unified teams will receive state championship trophies. The other teams will receive Final Four trophies.

There will be no official state champions.
