Balanced Wildcats too much for Hornets in 41-10 romp
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Bethune-Cookman rushed for 269 yards and passed for 224 in a 41-10 victory over Delaware State in a MEAC matchup at Municipal Stadium on Saturday.
The Wildcats won their second straight game and sixth in a row against the Hornets to improve to 2-5 overall and 2-3 in the MEAC. The Hornets are winless in eight games this season, including five league contests.
Quarterback Larry Brihm completed 14-of-24 passes for 167 yards and two touchdowns, and Cameron Rigby rushed for 106 yards and a score to lead the Wildcats.
Delaware State totaled 306 yards in the contest. The Hornets scored their lone touchdown on an 18-yard pass from backup quarterback Gil Rivera to Aris Scott to cut the Wildcats’ lead to 34-10 with 8:04 left to play. Scott led all receivers with five catches for 80 yards in the game.
Rivera came off the bench to six-of-seven passes for 103 yards.
Freshman Mike Waters rushed for 96 yards on 27 carries. Starting quarterback Daniel Epperson completed six-of-11 passes for 81 yards, but was intercepted twice.
Freshman defensive back Brock Nichols, a native of Naples, Fla., led the Hornets with a game-high 10 tackles, including seven solo stops.
The Hornets are home for their next two games, beginning with a battle against North Carolina Central next Saturday (Nov. 5). DSU will close out its 2016 home schedule the following week (Nov. 12) against North Carolina A&T. Both games begin at 2 p.m. at Alumni Stadium.
STINGERS: The Hornets played without RB/KR Brycen Alleyne (so.), the team’s top rusher and pass catcher, and among the MEAC’s all-purpose yardage leaders entering the contest. Alleyne sat out the contest due to a foot injury .. . DSU’s Wisdom Nzidee kicked his fourth field goal of the season, from 30 yards out, to pull the Hornets to within 7-3 with 12:11 left in the second quarter … Bethune-Cookman’s homecoming contest was also highlighted by the appearance of Democratic U.S. presidential candidate Hillary Clinton prior to the game … Clinton was campaigning in Florida on Saturday.
