The Delaware State News will feature a high school Athlete of the Week each week during the 2019-2020 school year.
The Athlete of the Week will be nominated and chosen by our readers. The nominating period will start at 2 p.m. on Friday and end at noon on Monday. A voting period will follow from 5 p.m. Monday through 5 p.m. Wednesday, using the link above.
This process will be performed exclusively online. When nominating an athlete, please include name, school and sport as well as a photo and brief description of why he or she deserves that week's honor.
All nominations must be high school varsity athletes and come from high schools within Kent or Sussex counties.
The winner will appear in print and online each Friday.
The Week 2 Athlete of the Week nominations are in. Follow this link to vote for one of the four nominees listed below:
Jessica Bergold -- Field hockey - senior -- Smyrna
Bergold scored three goals and one assist in Smyrna's 8-1 win over Appoquinimink. The senior forward then added one goal and two assists in the Eagles' 4-2 win over Middletown two days later.
Jabraih Luke -- Football -- senior -- Milford
Luke totaled 205 total yards and a touchdown in the Bucs' 27-16 win over Delaware Miltary Academy. He ran for 155 yards and added 50 receiving yards.
Patrick Short -- Boys' soccer -- senior -- Sussex Tech
Short scored all three of Sussex Tech's goals in a 3-2 Henlopen North win over Dover. All three goals came in the first half.
Elle Wood -- Field hockey -- senior -- Lake Forest
Wood scored the lone goal in Lake Forest's 1-0 win over Dover. So far this year, Wood leads the 2-0 Spartans in scoring.
