CHARLESTON, S.C. — Kevin Anderson didn’t make the free throws that might have helped Delaware seal its first CAA victory on Friday.
But then the senior guard made a defensive play that was just as big.
Anderson reached in to steal the ball from the Cougars’ John Meeks as he tried to get off a last-second shot as the Blue Hens held on for 67-66 victory over Charleston in a Colonial Athletic Association men’s basketball matchup at TD Arena.
The win snapped a two-game losing streak for Delaware (1-1 CAA, 10-5 overall), which lost a two-point game at UNC-Wilmington on Wednesday night.
“I’m really proud of our group to pick up a big road win in a tough place to play,” said UD coach Martin Ingelsby. “It’s good to see Ryan Allen playing well and having fun out there; we need him to score the basketball.
“We have three dynamic guards, and they all were really good today. We did what we needed to do to get the job done and split the road trip.”
Anderson (14 points) had a chance to give the Hens a three-point advantage but he missed the front end of a one-and-one fouls-shot situation with 12 seconds remaining.
Charleston (0-1 CAA, 8-5 overall) called timeout with seven seconds on the clock to set up a final play. But Anderson made the steal as Meeks tried to drive across the lane.
Anderson was greeted by is happy teammates as he ran down the court with the ball after the final buzzer sounded.
Jameer Nelson, Jr. finished with a game-high 22 points while Ryan Allen joined Anderson in scoring 14 points. Allen has now scored 1,619 career points, moving into fourth place in program history.
Delaware won in TD Arena for the first time since 2015.
In a contest that featured 10 lead changes and six ties, Delaware led for 32:46 of the game. The Hens were up by as many as 10 points in the second half and still held a seven-point advantage with 4:15 remaining.
Charleston, though, sliced Delaware’s lead down to 67-66 with 1:12 on the clock. The Hens went scoreless over the final 2:34.
The Cougars had a chance to go in front, but Dimitrius Underwood missed a jumper with 19 seconds left.
After the game, the CAA announced that Delaware's home game with James Madison, slated for Monday night, has been postponed because of COVID protocols within the JMU program. No makeup date has been scheduled yet.
The Hens are next scheduled to host Towson on Wednesday night.
