DOVER — Eight-time state champion Cape Henlopen High always has some talented girls’ lacrosse players.

But, even by those standards, coach P.J. Kesmodel says this year’s Vikings were a pretty special group.

“There’s like five legitimate, really good Division I (college) players on this team,” said the veteran coach. “We’ve never had that many before.

“We had four or five great athletes on this team. ... And, if you get them to play well and on the same page, it’s going to work out well.”

One of those top-notch Cape players was senior attack Lizzie Frederick, who was named the state’s Co-Player of the Year to lead a group of six downstate first-team selections on the Delaware Girls Lacrosse Coaches Association All-State squad.

In addition, Kesmodel was named the state Coach of the Year after leading the Vikings to their eighth straight state crown in what he says will be his last year as head coach.

On the boys' side, Caesar Rodney's Brinen Lefevre — a faceoff specialist — was the only downstater named first team All-State.

Frederick shared Player of the Year honors with Tower Hill senior midfielder Abby Manning, who led the Hillers to the state championship game.

With 66 goals and 34 assists, Frederick paced Cape to a 17-1 record. She had a total of 13 goals and 10 assists in three state tournament games, including eight goals and six assists in a semifinal win over Caravel.

In the fall, Frederick is headed for Temple, where her sister, Anna, as well as another former Viking, Taylor Gooch, are already members of the program.

Two other Cape players were named first-team All-State: junior midfielder Eddy Shoop and defender Annie Judge, who was the only sophomore named to the 15-player first team.

Judge was also part of a Viking defense that surrendered just 3.9 goals per game.

The only Delaware squad to score in double digits against Cape this season was Polytech, which had three players selected to the All-State first team.

Senior midfielder Jamie Trabaudo earned first-team All-State honors for the third year in a row after collecting 57 goals and 25 assists for the Panthers, who went 14-3 and reached the state semifinals.

In the fall, Trabaudo is headed for North Carolina, which just won the NCAA Division I national championship. Named Polytech’s Most Outstanding Female Senior Athlete, she finished her lacrosse career with a school-record 244 goals and 76 assists.

“She came in, physically, a strong athlete,” said Panthers coach Lynn Richardson. “And I think she’s leaving us, not only stronger, but her leadership, her maturity over the four years, her accepting of new roles and being a team player helped us be successful.”

While she started her high school career playing defense, fellow midfielder Ali McKay also ended up being a prolific scorer for Polytech. The senior netted a team-high 78 goals and 26 assists this spring to end up with 231 goals and 62 assists in her career.

McKay will continue her athletic career in field hockey at Bloomsburg (Pa.) University.

“When we moved her to the midfield, she just blossomed and became one of the best scoring threats in the state,” said Richardson. “The neat thing about them (McKay and Trabaudo) is they’re stars but they are still awesome team players. They never put themselves above anybody else. They thought of the team first.”

Richardson said the Panthers’ other first-team All-Stater, defender Kaitlin Bergold, could have been a talented offensive player, too. But Polytech needed her on defense, where she led the team in blocks and was a four-year starter.

“She was always our go-to defender, guarding the other team’s best attacker,” said Richardson. “She definitely proved herself. She was kind of a quiet leader. She accepted her responsibility, marked her girl and kind of held things together back there on the defense.”

Bergold was part of an 11-player Panther senior class that went 53-11 and reached the state finals as juniors. Six of their 11 losses came against Cape.

“This crew definitely put Polytech lacrosse on the map,” said Richardson.
