Even on a field hockey team that scored 110 goals, Peyton Kemp stood out.

The junior attack was directly involved in over a third of Delmar High’s goals this season, finishing with 28 goals and 13 assists.

And Kemp was at her best at the end of the season when the Wildcats captured the program’s first DIAA state championship this fall.

Kemp’s performance earned her state Player of the Year honors to lead a group of three Wildcats who were first-team selections on this year’s All-State field hockey squad.

A total of seven Henlopen Conference players were honored on the first team while Delmar coach Jodi Hollamon was named state Coach of the Year on the squad, which was selected by the Delaware Field Hockey Coaches Association.

Hollamon said Kemp’s skills are what make her such a scoring threat.

“She can eliminate defenders because of her outstanding stick skill and soft hands,” said Hollamon. “She knows when to give the ball up for the assist, but also finishes very very well.

“During the playoffs Peyton picked her game up to another level and was a huge part of the success of Delmar in winning the state championship.”

Delmar center midfielder Ashlyn Carr was one of just three sophomores named to the All-State first team. She finished with 18 goals and seven assists for the 18-1 Wildcats.

Hollamon said Carr’s unselfishness makes her such a good player. The youngster has already committed to national champion Delaware.

“She is a quiet leader who controls the midfield for us,” said Hollamon. “She moves the ball well and has a rocket shot from the top of the circle.”

Delmar surrendered just eight goals this season and one of the big reasons was the play of first-team All-State defender Caitlyn Wink.

Wink, who will continue her career at Towson next fall, also chipped in with seven goals and eight assists.

“She is fast, aggressive and steps up to stop our opponents very well,” said Hollamon. “She is a vocal leader who brings a lot of intensity to the field.”

Cape Henlopen, which went 14-3, had both junior Annie Judge and sophomore Alia Marshall named to the All-State first team this year.

A midfielder and one the team captains, Judge helped the Vikings claim another Henlopen Conference title and reach the state quarterfinals. Already committed to Temple, Judge tallied eight goals and 12 assists this season.

“She controlled the center of the field for us and started most of our plays from the back field,” said Cape coach Kate Austin. “Annie played a big role on corner offense and defense and has tremendous skill and game sense.”

The Vikings’ Marshall was another one of the three sophomores named to the first team. She collected seven goals and 12 assists from her center midfield position, where she was a playmaker for Cape.

“Alia is one of the fastest players I have seen come through Delaware and her skill level matches her speed,” said Austin.

Milford had a big season this fall, going 14-3 and losing to only state-champion Delmar (twice) and Cape Henlopen. One of the big reasons for the Buccaneers’ success was the play of first-team All-Stater Darby Brennan.

A junior midfielder, Brennan controlled the center of the field for Milford. She finished with eight goals and 16 assists.

“She is one of the most talented players I’ve ever coached,” said Bucs’ coach Andrea Fleming. “She has phenomenal ball control and field vision. She is an excellent team player and leader. She’s extremely coachable and always pushes herself and others around her to be the best.”

Senior Cam Dennis was a big part of Polytech’s success over the past four seasons. She was an All-Stater each of the last three years, making first team as both a sophomore and senior.

Dennis was a consistent scoring threat, especially off corners, as she totaled 17 goals and six assists this fall as the Panthers reached the state semifinals. She’s headed for Division III power Salisbury next year.
