William O. 'Bill' Husfelt, 86

MIDDLETOWN - William O. "Bill" Husfelt, of Middletown, passed away Tuesday, March 18, 2008, at Christiana Care-Christiana Hospital, Newark. He was 86.

Born Sept. 3, 1921, in Cecilton, Md., he was the son of the late Jerry T. and Florence (Cleaver) Husfelt.

Bill worked at the Acme Market in Middletown for 38 years as manager of the meat department.

Following his retirement in 1983 at the age of 62, Bill was full of life and energy and took up jogging, something he enjoyed for more than 20 years. He competed in more than 100 5K and 10K road races, winning in his age group many times. He ran and finished the Caesar Rodney Half Marathon at the age of 68. Bill continued to exercise up until the time of his hospitalization.

He was a fixture at the firehouse, especially in the workout room.

Bill loved the outdoors and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He especially enjoyed traveling to Dover Downs to watch the horse races.

Bill was a well-known gardener in the area. His lima beans were legendary. He enjoyed distributing them to his friends over the summer. His picture was often seen in the Middletown Transcript for having the first ripe tomato, including last year.

Mr. Husfelt was a life member of the Volunteer Hose Co. of Middletown, where he served on many committees and held various offices. During his 68 years with the fire company, he served as assistant chief for a number of years and was a member of the board of directors. He was the recipient of many awards, including Fireman of the Year and Highest Attendance for seven years.

Bill was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Evelyn M. Husfelt, on Aug. 25, 2005; a sister, Ann Husfelt; two brothers, Robert "Bobby" Husfelt and Howard Husfelt; and a daughter-in-law, Joyce Lee Husfelt, on April 29, 2007.

He is survived by two sons, William "Butch" Husfelt and George Husfelt, both of Middletown; a daughter, Susan Horgan of Middletown; two sisters, Margaret Parsons of Middletown and Catherine Poore of Haacks Point, Md.; four grandchildren, Dina Fleming, Danielle Arrants, Michelle Newitt and Greg Husfelt; nine great-grandchildren; and many dear friends.

A viewing will be from 6 to 8 p.m. this evening at the Daniels & Hutchison Funeral Home, 212 N. Broad St., Middletown.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday at the Volunteer Hose Co. of Middletown, 27 W. Green St., where family and friends may call one hour prior to services.

Interment will follow at Old Drawyers Cemetery, near Odessa.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Mr. Husfelt's memory to the Volunteer Hose Co. of Middletown, 27 W. Green St., Middletown, DE.
