DOVER - Retired U.S. Air Force Tech Sgt. Webster Henry Looper of Dover died peacefully Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2008, at Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover, following a lengthy illness. He was 74.
Mr. Looper was born Dec. 4, 1933, in Jersey City, N.J., the oldest of three children born to the late Webster Looper and Fannie Ruth (Venable) Looper.
He attended school in Jersey City, where he enjoyed studying art and world history.
When Mr. Looper left school, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, where he served with distinction for more than 20 years. He thoroughly enjoyed his job as a loadmaster, flying on Air Force C-141, C-130 and C-5 aircraft.
He was a Vietnam War veteran who received numerous awards and commendations for his service, including the Distinguished Flying Cross, and flew many missions into combat zones and other high conflict areas
Mr. Looper was a travel enthusiast, and while serving in the Air Force, he visited many countries including Australia, Belgium, Cambodia, Egypt, England, Ethiopia, France, Germany, Greece, Greenland, Guam, Guantanamo, Holland, Iceland, India, Iran, Ireland, Israel, Japan, Korea, Lebanon, Libya, Mexico, the Netherlands, Pakistan, Panama, Portugal, Scotland, Spain, Switzerland and Taiwan. He loved to bring his family gifts from his travels.
Mr. Looper, a freelance photographer, enjoyed taking photographs in many of the countries he visited. He also enjoyed photographing family and friends.
In his retirement from the military, he developed a business, Web Co., to install alarm systems.
While stationed at Dover Air Force Base, Mr. Looper met Mary Hester (Lewis) Browne. After many years of companionship, they were married on Dec. 22, 1996.
He enjoyed spending time with his family. He especially loved his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They were a source of much joy in the later years of his life.
Mr. Looper was preceded in death by his wife, Mary (Browne) Looper; his mother, Fannie Ruth (Venable) Looper; his father, Webster Looper; and his sister, Rose Vernal (Looper) Hamlett.
He is survived by his daughters, Vanessa Browne-Barbour (Edward Barbour) and Victoria L. Browne (Anthony Jones); his son, Cecil Browne; younger brother, David Looper; niece, Deliese Davis (Jimmie Davis); two nephews, Philip Judge and Joseph Hamlett Jr.; brother-in-law, Joseph Hamlett Sr.; grandchildren, Tyronda E. Winchester, Frederick D. Saunders, Dontae L. Conyers (Marquette), Camille M. Saunders, George Anthony Davis and Nathaniel J. Barbour; great-grandchildren, Elijah, Devante, Justin, Xavier, Amayia, Kalil, Avante and Curtis Jr.; lifelong friendships with two very special people in his life, Randolph Brown and Wesley Hall; and many other family members who loved and will miss him very much.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Bennie Smith Funeral Home, 717 W. Division St., Dover, where friends may call two hours prior to the service.
Interment will be in Sharon Hills Memorial Gardens, Dover.
