TOWNSEND - Walter Pitman "Walt" Spicer, Jr., 69, of Townsend, went to be with the Lord on Oct. 7, 2010, following injuries sustained in an automobile accident while he and his wife, MaryAnna, were on their annual moose hunting trip in Canada. Born on Oct. 12, 1940, in Wilmington, he was the son of the late Helen (Austin) and Walter P. Spicer, Sr. From an early age, Walt showed an exceptional aptitude for mechanical problem solving. He honed this talent at Brown Vocational High School where he focused on auto mechanics. In his earlier years, Walt owned and operated a service station on Rt. 40 near Glasgow; owned and managed a farm equipment dealership in Smyrna and farmed substantial acreage around Taylor's Bridge using his home plot at Flemings Landing as a base and grain holding facility. Walt was retired from Local 542 Operating Engineers where he worked as a heavy equipment operator/mechanic for many years. In September of this year, he retired from Talley Brothers in Wilmington. Hunting was one of Walt's favorite pastimes - everything from fishing to moose hunting, along with traveling with his wife, MaryAnna, and their grandchildren. They took many trips in their motor home together. He enjoyed crabbing from his boat, which for many years was slipped at Rock Hall, Md. In his most recent years, he enjoyed volunteer work with his church, using the computer to manage his many business and recreational interests and tinkering with anything that needed building or fixing. Walter is survived by his wife, MaryAnna (Poore) Spicer; a son, Barry Spicer and his companion, Lynn Dugan; a sister and brother-in-law, Nancy and Homer Reihm, along with two grandsons, two nieces and many dear friends. Memorial services will be 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 3, at St. Georges United Methodist Church, 109 North Broad Street, St. Georges. Family and friends may visit Tuesday evening, Nov. 2, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Daniels & Hutchison Funeral Home LLC, 212 N. Broad Street, Middletown. Interment will be in Old Drawyers Cemetery, near Odessa, following services on Wednesday. Walt's family suggests that memorial contributions be made to St. Georges United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 145, St. Georges, DE 19733-0145. Arrangements by Daniels & Hutchison Funeral Home LLC, 212 N. Broad Street, Middletown, DE.
