CLAYTON - Terence James Hughes of Clayton went home to be with the Lord on Monday, Nov. 12, 2007. He was 81.
Mr. Hughes was born Nov. 2, 1926, in Baltimore, to the late Terence J. and Anne C. (Pohlman) Hughes.
He graduated from Loyola High School in Towson, Md., and attended Loyola College in Baltimore, and Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.
Mr. Hughes also served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
An entrepreneur, he opened a Western Auto store in Long Branch, N.J., which he later relocated to Main St. and Glenwood Ave. in Smyrna.
He retired from the store in 1978, but remained active in real estate until earlier this year.
Mr. Hughes was a handyman and woodworker, and enjoyed horseback riding.
He attended Townsend Free Will Baptist Church.
Mr. Hughes was preceded in death by his daughter, Katherine Everett in 2003.
He is deeply missed by his beloved wife of 27 years, Mildred (Mickey) Hughes of Clayton; two sons, Terence J. of Smyrna, and John G. and his wife Susan of Dover; two stepsons, Earl W. Wood of Port Orange, Fla. and Mark T. Wood and his wife Susan of Middletown; two sisters, Anne Inman of Annapolis, Md. and Julia Mayer of Baltimore; he was blessed with eight grandchildren; and one great-grandson, all of whom he cherished.
A memorial service to celebrate Terry's life will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Faries Funeral Chapel, 29 S. Main Street, Smyrna, where friends may call one hour prior to the services.
Burial will be private.
