Spence M. Messick

SEAFORD - Spence M. Messick, Sr. passed away at home on Saturday, Nov. 16, 2013. He was born in Milford, the son of the late Walter B. and Alice D. (Pennington) Messick. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving from 1958 to 1962. He was a painter for Union Local 100 for 38 years, retiring in 1999. He and his wife also raised chickens in Delmar for 26 years. He was a member of Nanticoke Senior Center in Seaford. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, crabbing, and going to flea markets and sales. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Jane L. (Lord) Messick in 2005; brother, Read Earl Messick; sister, Maxine Hazel Messick; and grandson, Levi Edward Messick. He is survived by his children, Spence "Junior" Messick of Seaford and Teresa Greene and husband Dennis of Delmar, Md.; brother, Ray P. Messick of Gulfport, Miss., mother-in-law, Rachel Mae Lord of Seaford; four grandchildren, Wayne Alan Messick, Shawn Edward Messick, Rachel Michele Dykes and Sarah Jane Greene; five great-grandchildren, Gavin M. Dykes, Liam W. Dykes, Aaliyah Moore, Jayden Messick and Kallen Messick. Funeral Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2013 in the chapel of Berry-Short Funeral Home, 119 NW Front St., Milford, DE, where friends may call after noon. Interment will be in Milford Community Cemetery, Milford. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to: Delaware Hospice Center, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE 19963.
