Camden/Wyoming - Shelia Sammons Pierce departed from our lives on Thursday, Nov. 1, 2018 in Bayhealth Kent General Hospital, Dover.
Mrs. Peirce was born on July 4, 1957 in Dover to Luther "Jake" Sammons and the late Bertha Morris Sammons.
She grew up around Dover and attended the local Native American School at Fork Branch for two years where she learned to hate olives. She graduated from Dover High School and shortly after married the love of her life, Herbert J. Pierce and moved to Bridgeton, N.J. Fifteen years later they moved back to Delaware. Over the years she had worked at Grants Department Store, while it was in Rodney Village Shopping Center, ten years at the Cumberland Manor Nursing Home, the Blue Coat Inn until it closed and finally at the Country Eatery.
Shelia was a member of the Nanticoke Lenni Lenape tribe of Bridgeton, N.J. and of the Immanuel Union United Methodist Church. She enjoyed solving crossword puzzles, reading several newspapers online, and listening to gospel and country music day and night. Her favorite musicians were The Gaither's Family, Jessie Dixon, and The Crabb Family.
Shelia was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert J. Pierce; brothers, Luther "Jakie" Sammons, and James "Jimmy" Sammons; brother-in-law, Anthony "Tony" Seeney; and in-laws, Morris B. "Buster" Pierce Jr., Leona B. "Sissy" Pierce, Victoria C. "Vicky" Harmon, Benjamin "Benny" Pierce, Mary E. Pierce.
She is survived by her two children, Arlene Christina Torres (Julio) of Smyrna and Ashley Marrie Pierce and companion Michael Blanchard Jr. of Camden/Wyoming; grandchildren, Alexis Pierce, Marco, Marissa, Adrianna, Julio, Jr., Emilio, and Mateo Torres of Smyrna; sisters, Brenda Sammons and Wanda Seeney both of Dover; sisters-in-law, Lori Sammons and Anita Sammons both of Dover; in-laws, Geraldine Durham, Richard Pierce (Margaret), Ellis Pierce (Pat), Pearl Brown (Roney), Betty Sheppard, Donald Pierce (Melissa), Delilah Warner (Lee), Jane Pierce, Janet Stevenson (Jonathon), and Ricky Pierce. Also, survived by her god son, Keith Seeney; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
Shelia was loved and will be greatly missed by many.
Funeral services will be held 12 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2018 at Immanuel Union United Methodist Church, 756 Main Street, Cheswold, DE 19936. Friends may call from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m. Interment will be in the Fork Branch Cemetery, Dover.
