CHESTERTOWN - The spirit of Rowena Stetson Mullins, of Chestertown, took flight to rest peacefully and eternally with God on Sunday, Feb. 3, 2008. She was 87.

Mrs. Mullins was born June 30, 1920, in Berkeley, Calif., to the late Philip Cushing and Dorothy Pillsbury Stetson.

She graduated from House in the Pines High School in Norton, Mass.

Mrs. Mullins studied theater and English at the University of California at Berkeley and later attended Goucher College.

She appeared in stage productions at The Little Theater in California in the 1940s.

In 1947, she married her husband of 46 years, Professor Lorin John Mullins.

They lived in Denmark and Indiana before settling in Ruxton, where they raised their children and spent many summers in Woods Hole, Mass.

They then retired to Chestertown in 1993, and that same year she was predeceased by her husband.

During World War II, Mrs. Mullins worked as an assistant to Commander Falge. She later worked as an administrative secretary in both the health care and legal professions.

She was a member of the Unitarian Universalist churches in Towson and Chestertown, active in the League of Women Voters, and as a faithful member she contributed to the Twelve Step Program by mentoring others for 47 years.

In 1980, she served in the presidential campaign of independent party candidate John Anderson.

She enjoyed swimming, traveling and entertaining.

Mrs. Mullins was a devoted mother and grandmother. A master of literature and the English language, she always stressed the importance of education.

She was also a very spiritual and intuitive person. She will be remembered for her offbeat sense of humor, imagination and bright smile.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Winifred Stetson Rose.

She is survived by a daughter, Carla Mullins Witten and her husband Sam; grandchildren, Emily, Cole and Alex, all of Charlotte, N.C.; a son, Andrew Sprague Mullins and his wife Lisa; grandchildren, Megan and Eric, all of Finksburg; and her sister, Barbara Stetson Carman of Tacoma, Wash.

A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Saturday in Wesley Hall, Heron Point, Chestertown.

A memorial service will be held at Towson Unitarian Universalist Church at a later date.

The family would like to give special acknowledgements to the staff at Heron Point, Chester River Home Care and Hospice, loyal caregivers Shirley Foster and Heather Orsini, and all her steadfast friends who offered their care and encouragement.

Instead of flowers, contributions can be made to Chester River Home Care and Hospice, Chestertown, MD 21620; or to the League of Women Voters of Kent County, P.O. Box 374, Chestertown, MD 21620.
