HARRINGTON - Robert John Masten Sr. of Harrington died Monday, March 26, 2007, in Bayhealth-Milford Memorial Hospital. He was 85.

Mr. Masten was born in Smyrna, son of the late Walter B. and Kathryn Masten.

He served his country proudly during World War II in the SeaBees.

Mr. Masten worked as a switchman for a telephone company for more than 38 years, retiring in 1984.

As a hobby, he collected oyster plates, miniature, antique oil lamps, and railroad books. He was an avid carver of birds and ducks and won several blue ribbons for his carvings. In his spare time, he loved to read, garden and watch birds. He enjoyed spending time with his family at his cottage and on his pontoon boat at Broadkill Beach and Masseys Landing.

Mr. Masten was a member and former trustee of the Asbury United Methodist Church. He was also a member of the Harrington Moose Lodge 534, and the Telephone Pioneers.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Burten Masten and James Masten.

He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Sara Emily Masten; two sons and two daughters-in-law, Robert John and Marge Masten Jr. and David Walter and Phyllis Masten, all of Harrington; two daughters and a son-in-law, Lisa and Terry Helsel of Harrington and Mariate Gomez Bernardo of Madrid, Spain; his grandchildren and their spouses, Robert and Debra Masten, Christopher and Tina Masten, Kathryn and Raymond Blanchette, Dean Helsel, Lynne Helsel, and Christopher Helsel; great-grandchildren, Savannah Masten, Elaine Masten, Carmen and Anthony Blanchette; and several cousins, nieces, nephews.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday in Melvin Funeral Home, 15522 South DuPont Highway, Harrington.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Friday in the funeral home.

Burial will be in Hollywood Cemetery, Harrington.
