SEAFORD - Robert Francis Dowd of Seaford died Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2007, in his home. He was 87.
Mr. Dowd was born in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., son of the late Katy McLaughlin and Frank Dowd.
He was a schoolteacher, football coach, principal and administrator with the Seaford School District for 38 years. He held a master"s degree in education.
He was a World War II and Korean War Army veteran.
After graduating from Mansfield State Teachers College in 1942, Bob enlisted in the U.S. Army and completed officer candidate school at Fort Benning, Ga. He participated in seven first-wave amphibious landings, including Saipan, Tinian, and Okinawa. He was awarded the Silver Star for bravery for his actions on Saipan.
Following the war, Bob took a coaching-teaching position with Seaford High School. His coaching career was put on hold in 1951 when he was recalled to active duty for the Korean War on the day of his wedding to the former Jean Cameron of Dover. Bob was assigned to Fort Knox, Ky. where he coached the Tankers, the Fort Knox football team. Following the Korean War, Coach Dowd returned to Seaford and compiled an 84-31-11 record over 14 seasons. Following an undefeated season in 1955, he was named Delaware coach of the year and was instrumental in the founding of the annual Blue-Gold All-Star football game as the first coach for the "South."
Mr. Dowd was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church, Seaford, The Legion of Mary and of Virgil Wilson Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4961.
He is survived by his wife, Jean Cameron Dowd of Seaford; two sons and two daughters-in-law, Robert J. and Lynn Dowd of Friendship, Md. and U.S. Navy Commander, Frank J. and Cindra Dowd of Corpus Christi, Texas; three daughters and three sons-in-law, Molly and Dr. Michael J. Metzler of Seaford, Katy and Taylor Beattie of Virginia Beach, Va. and Ann and George Hubley of West Chester, Pa.; 11 grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sons, Delaware state trooper, Gerard Thomas Dowd who died in the line of duty, Sept. 11, 1990; and an infant son,Daniel.
Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday in Watson-Yates Funeral Home, Front and King streets, Seaford.
A Mass of Christian burial will be 1 p.m. Sunday in Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church, Stein Highway, Seaford. The Rev. Joseph Hurley will officiate.
Burial will be in Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery, Seaford.
Instead of flowers memorial contributions can be made to the Robert F. Dowd Scholarship Fund, care of the Seaford School District.
