MILFORD - The family, friends, and the chess players of Delmarva note the passing of Richard Vail Johnson on Apr. 7, 2013. Richard, "Rick" to many who knew him, began his local chess playing at the Central Delaware Chess Club. His first year there he never won a game but he began his study of chess. He became a master of the Philador Defense and his expertise in other chess openings established him as one of the most formidable players on the Peninsula. Richard reigned for many years as his club champion, and, throughout much of his later life, he overcame not only chess opponents, but immense and painful physical problems. He will be missed, but as his Lord Jesus said, he that believes on Him shall never die. Services for Richard will be held privately. Condolences may be emailed at www.delmarvaobits.com/rogers
