GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Rev. Raymond C. Best, of Greensboro, died Sunday, Nov. 25, 2007, at his home. He was 77.

Rev. Best was born in Williamsport, Pa., on May 30, 1930.

He played on one of the first teams of Little League baseball, founded in Williamsport in 1939.

After graduating from Gettysburg College and the Lutheran Theological Seminary, Philadelphia, Rev. Best served as assistant pastor of Christ Lutheran Church, Allentown, Pa., from 1955-58, and as mission developer and first pastor of St. Andrew's Lutheran Church, Dover, Del., from 1958-96.

While in Dover he served terms as dean of Lutheran congregations in Delaware and the Eastern Shore of Maryland, president of the Delaware State Council of Churches and president of the Delmarva Ecumenical Agency.

He was a founder and first president of Lutheran Senior Services of Dover, which has built and supervises housing facilities for seniors.

After retiring to Greensboro in 1996, Rev. Best served several Lutheran congregations as interim pastor, including Prince of Peace, Greensboro; Shiloh, Lewisville; and First, Lexington.

Rev. Best was preceded in death by his parents, Chester and Nellie Paulamus Best; his first wife, Tillie Eisenhart Best; and his brothers, Harold and Jack Best.

Surviving are his wife, Mary "Pat" Hauk Best; a son, Andrew Best Sr. and wife Jennifer of Dover; a daughter, Ann and husband James Kurz of Wallingford, Pa.; and his grandchildren, Andrew Best Jr. and wife Ashley, Michael Best and Kiera Kurz.

A celebration of the resurrection will be 11 a.m. Friday at Christ Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Dr. Dwight Shellaway officiating.

Interment will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Mount Rose Cemetery in York, Pa., with the Rev. Brenda Ritterpusch officiating.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday and from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday in Christ Lutheran Church.

Instead of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Christ Lutheran Church, 3600 Lawndale Drive, Greensboro, N.C. 27408; American Cancer Society, 4 Oak Branch Drive, Greensboro, NC 27401; Hospice & Palliative Care of Greensboro, 2500 Summit Ave., Greensboro, NC 27405; or to the charity of choice.
