CAMDEN-WYOMING - The Rev. Charles F. Evans Sr. of Camden-Wyoming passed away Saturday, May 19, 2007, in Christiana Medical Center, Wilmington. He was 77.
Mr. Evans was born July 18, 1929, in Chatteroy, W.Va., to the late Mathias and Ida Mae (Little) Evans.
He retired from General Motors.
Mr. Evans was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during the Korean conflict.
He became a minister in 1975.
Mr. Evans was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3238, Camden. He joined in March 1988, and was elected post chaplain, district chaplain and state chaplain, all from 1999 to present. He was also appointed as national deputy chief of staff for 2005-06.
He was a member of the Military Order of Cooties and elected as a sky pilot from 1999 to present, grand of Delaware chaplain from 2005-07, supreme third district chaplain for 2005-07 and nominated for chaplain of the year and grand of Delaware for 2007. He was also a member of the King Crab Pup Tent 2, Texas Horny Toads, VFW National Home of Children and Walter L. Fox Post 2.
Mr. Evans enjoyed fishing.
He was one of 16 brothers and sisters, 11 of which died as young children. In addition, he was preceded in death by his wife, Eva Mae Evans; a grandson, Phillip Charles Evans; and three sisters, Alice Payne, Bamma Slaughter and Peru Hill.
He is survived by his children and their spouses, James E. Evans of South Carolina, Aline and Kenneth James Hutchins of Dover, Charles F. Jr. and Karen Sue Evans of Camden, Arthur D. and Darlene Evans of Camden, and Donna Sue and Randy Vaughn of South Carolina; his grandchildren, Dina Logan, Kim Rogers, Tracey Logan, Ken Hutchins, Kathy Steinhoff, Cheryl Cox, Tosha Yates, Angie Timmons, Faye Evans, Crystal Hammond, Theresa Hart, Jason Hart, Carla Hart, Dallas Vaughn and Austin Vaughn; an honorary granddaughter, Dakota Hunter; 21 great-grandchildren; a sister, Sylvia Sluder; and numerous nieces and nephews that he loved dearly.
Remembrance services will be Friday at 10 a.m. in Trader Funeral Home, Dover, where friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Sharon Hills Memorial Park, Dover.
The family requests that memorial contributions be given to VFW Post 3238 of Camden; or the VFW National Home for Children, Eaton Rapids, MI 48827.
