WILMINGTON - Raymond M. Harbeson Sr. of Dover, formerly of Wilmington, passed away surrounded by his loving family in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2007. He was 83.
Raymond served God, country and his fellowman diligently. He will be greatly missed.
He was born in Wilmington, son of Gilbert Sr. and Helena (Conly) Harbeson.
Mr. Harbeson graduated from Wilmington High School in 1941 and attended Temple University.
He served in World War II as a U.S. Army Ranger under Gen. George Patton. He landed on Normandy beaches 24 hours before D-Day.
He was awarded the Bronze Star, Purple Hearts and the Croix De Guerre, as well as many other citations.
He retired from Diamond State Telephone Co. after 44 years of service. He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America.
As a member of Calvary Presbyterian Church for more than 50 years, he served as an elder, youth group leader, men's prayer lunch leader and on other numerous committees. He was a longtime member of Granite-Corinthian Masonic Lodge 34.
He also served as a Scout Master of Brooklyn Terrace Boy Scout Troop 58, where he was responsible for numerous Boy Scout activities, including camping at Camp Rodney.
In his retirement, he and his wife enjoyed worldwide travel and wintering in Cape Coral, Fla.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brother, Gilbert Harbeson Jr.
He is survived by his wife of over 60 years, Elizabeth (Davison) Harbeson; his four children, Raymond M. Harbeson Jr. and his wife Ellen of Dover, Barbara Draper and her husband William Sr. of Wilmington, John G. Harbeson and his wife Mary of Dover and Ronald L. Harbeson of Newark; nine grandchildren, R. Mark Harbeson, Robert Harbeson, Eric Harbeson, William Draper Jr., Elizabeth Bielicki, Robert Draper, Rebecca Cronk, J. Matthew Harbeson and Jonathan Harbeson; four great-grandchildren, Tristan, Sarah, David and Scott, all of whom he was very proud.
Funeral services will be held Monday 1 p.m. in Calvary Presbyterian Church.
The Masonic service will be held 15 minutes before the memorial service.
Burial will be held following the memorial service at Silverbrook Cemetery, Wilmington.
Instead of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to Calvary Presbyterian Church, 501 S. Maryland Ave., Wilmington, DE 19804; or the Boy Scouts of America, 801 N. Washington St., Wilmington, DE 19801.
