Selbyville - Raymond Lewis Moore departed this life on Sunday, Oct. 7, 2018, at his residence. Born in Selbyville, he was the son of the late David H. Moore and Vera L. Tindley Moore. His wife, Patricia C. Moore, also preceded him in death.
Mr. Moore served in the United States Army as a Paratrooper in the elite 11th Airborne Division, which later became the 82nd Airborne Division.
He graduated from Delaware State College where he majored in Health and Physical Education. Mr. Moore taught at Phillip Showell Elementary School, and later became a Health and Physical Education Educator at Worcester High School, then Berlin Middle School. He retired as an Assistant Principal at Stephen Decatur High School. While he was Assistant Principal, he became the first African American member of the Indian River District School Board. After retiring, he agreed to return to the Worcester County Board of Education to serve as Coordinator of Sports & Athletics.
Mr. Moore was a member of Zoar United Methodist Church where he served as Treasurer, Chair of Pastor's Parish Relations, Cemetery Caretaker, and member of the Board of Trustees and United Methodist Men. He was also a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., Rising Sun Masonic Lodge #4 F. & A.M., and Sussex County Aging and Disability Committee. For several years, Mr. Moore was President of the Board of Commissioners for the Selbyville Public Library.
He was inducted into the Delaware State University AA Legacy Hall of Fame and Delaware Afro-American Sports Hall of Fame.
He will be lovingly remembered by a daughter, Dana M. Lambert; two sons, Raymond L. Moore, Jr. and Jerrod D. Jarmon; a sister, Etta Mae Moore; four sisters-in-law, Lorraine Smith, Lavessa (George) Glenn, Debra Clark, and Jacqueline Clark; two brothers-in-law, William Clark, Jr. and Daniel (Pam) Clark, Sr.; three grandchildren, Madison Moore, Mackenzie Moore, and Mia Lambert; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, in-laws, and friends.
Mr. Moore will lie in repose on Saturday, Oct. 20, 2018, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Calvary Pentecostal Church, 13325 Worcester Highway, Bishopville, MD. The funeral service will begin at 1 PM. Rev. Timothy Duffield will be the Officiant. Elder Rosie Hall is the Host Pastor. Interment will follow at Golden Acres Cemetery, Hotel Road, Bishopville.
