Troyer, 94 DOVER - Raymond Eugene Troyer known as Ray, passed away on Saturday, September 19, 2015, peacefully in his sleep after suffering for several years. He had been in Bayhealth and then to Genesis Silver Lake for only four days. Ray was born November 2, 1920, in Peru, Indiana, the son of the late Ammon and Huldah Troyer. The family lived in Kokomo for several years on a farm during cold winters until Ray's uncle talked them into moving to Delaware. Ray was educated in a one room school house through the 8th grade in Greenwood, Delaware. He excelled in math, which helped him in his future jobs. At the age of 16 he drove tractor trailer trucks of fruit and vegetables for Mervine Company in Greenwood to Eastern state to be sold at markets. He later drove hundreds of chickens north for many companies. When the war broke out, Ray worked in the CCC camps in New Jersey making equipment and ammunition for soldiers. As time passed, he met his future wife, Nellie Powell in Harrington, Delaware. He became a salesman of Buchanan Service Firestone for several years and later transferred to the Dover store on the corner of Governor and Lookerman Streets. At that time he became the salesman for checking on gas station dealers and farmers in Delaware, Maryland south and western areas. He became top salesman and worked until he retired after 30 years. Ray enjoyed gardening in back of his home with vegetables and strawberries until the lot was seeded in grass several years ago. He still enjoyed the three tomato plants the garage. He was proud of his grandchildren and his great-grandchildren and all their accomplishments. Christmas was a time for church, carols and togetherness. The boys played guitars and drums and all would try their skills singing carols. Sundays were spent attending Wesley United Methodist Church where the family were members since 1952. Ray was also a life member of the Dover Elks Lodge BPOE 1903 for 51 years where he had served as treasurer for 20 years. During his retirement, Ray drove friends to and from airports and different destinations. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Nellie, who passed away September 2, 2001, a brother, Marvin Troyer, and sisters, Alma Schrock and her husband Elvin, Viola Kreider and her husband Martin, and Wilma Lee. He is survived by his daughter Judie and son-in-law, Al Niezgoda of Dover; two grandsons and their wives, Jeff and Shelby Niezgoda of Hartly, and Kevin and Brandi Niezgoda of Magnolia; granddaughter Patty and her partner Shelia Niezgoda of Smyrna; five great-grandchildren, Scott, Kyle and Alex Niezgoda of Hartly, and Lauren and Madison Niezgoda of Magnolia. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at Torbert Funeral Chapel 1145 East Lebanon Road, Dover, Delaware, 11am Thursday, September 24 where friends may call from 6-8pm Wednesday and from 10am until service time. Interment will be at Lakeside Cemetery, North State Street, Dover, Delaware. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Wesley United Methodist Church, 209 South State Street, Dover, Delaware 19901 or Dover Elks Lodge BPOE 1903, Saulsbury Road, Dover, Delaware 19904.
