Ralph Joseph Scaramo, 82
DOVER - Ralph Joseph Scaramo of Dover, a retired U.S. Air Force master sergeant, died Monday, Oct. 8, 2007, at his home. He was 82.
He was born Jan. 3, 1925, in Springfield, Ill., where he was also raised.
Mr. Scaramo was the son of the late Michael and Lillian Scaramo.
He graduated from the School of the Blessed Sacrament and was baptized at Saint Peter and Paul Church.
At the age of 19, Mr. Scaramo enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, where he retired after 22 years of service.
While enlisted in the Air Force, he pursued higher education and received his Bachelor of Science in mathematics from Rutgers University, New Jersey.
Upon retiring from the Air Force, Mr. Scaramo went to work for the U.S. Postal Service for a period of time before seeking a position at Chesapeake Utilities, where he retired in 1992.
Mr. Scaramo was a life member of the Adamstown, Pa., Veterans of Foreign Wars.
After retirement, he did community service in the form of working at the Dover Air Force Base Air Mobility Command Museum and also assisted in transporting persons from Luther Towers to doctors appointments or to the airport as needed.
In 1969, Mr. Scaramo met and married his wife of 38 years, Norma, the love of his life, and the additional joy she brought to his life in the form of five stepsons and two stepdaughters whom he considered, and loved, as his very own.
He loved to tell a joke to anyone that would listen.
Mr. Scaramo was an avid fan of all sports, with football and basketball being his favorites.
He loved being around people and he loved time spent with his large family. His grandchildren were his heart and he loved them all dearly.
Mr. Scaramo loved his home and his yard and spent many hours maintaining his grass to meet his standards.
In December 2006, Mr. Scaramo and Norma"s home burned down and many people showed them much kindness. He often spoke of this kindness and his appreciation to these people, many whom he"d never met previously. In spite of the fire, it was one of the best years of his life.
Mr. Scaramo was preceded in death by his son, Wayne G. Scaramo, in November 2005; and the late Shirley Freeman Scaramo.
He is survived by five sons and their wives, Lawrence W. and Lisa Heesh of Lincoln, George M. and Wendy Heesh of Smyrna, Robert T. and Diane Heesh of Felton, Martin J. Heesh and his companion Carol Jones, both of Dover, and David C. and Carol Heesh of Milford; two daughters, Mary Ellen M. Harmon and her husband Tom Jr. of Dover and Tina M. Heesh of Smyrna; 14 grandchildren, Jamie Heesh of Mexico, Reese Heesh of Camden, Jesse Heesh of Smyrna, Specialist IV Jesse Todd of North Carolina currently serving in Iraq, Crystal (Joe) Gonzon of Smyrna, Matthew Heesh of Smyrna, Jessica and Alexis Heesh of Lincoln, Mandi and Kevin Heesh of Dover, Tom and Heather Harmon of Dover, Taylor Heesh of Smyrna, and Zachary Heesh of Milford; seven great-grandchildren; a host of nieces and nephews; and many loving family and friends.
A viewing will be from 6 to 9 p.m. with services at 8 p.m. Friday at Torbert Funeral Chapel, 1145 E. Lebanon Road, Dover.
Interment will be 10 a.m. Monday in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear.
