Nancy A McCurley (Baker)
On January 6, 2023 Nancy A McCurley (Baker) passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by loved ones. She is predeceased by her husband of 53 years David Reed McCurley and her son David Michael McCurley. She is survived by her four daughters: Davona L. McCurley, Deborah L. Haire (Bob), Denese M. Lindsey (Craig) and Ann A. Meekins, 9 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, and 7 great-great grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Nancy was the daughter of William Robert Baker and Elmyra (Myra) Holland Baker. She grew up on the Eastern Shore of Maryland in the town of Whaleyville, Maryland (Berlin). Nancy was a 1951 graduate of Buckingham High School in Berlin, Maryland and a past member of Buckingham Presbyterian Church.
Upon graduating from high school, Nancy began her career working at Wayne Pump as a bookkeeper where she worked until she married David R. McCurley in June of 1953. She left her small secure farming community to become a world traveler, all while raising five kids. She volunteered as a Brownie and Girl Scout Leaders in Florida and Arizona. In her spare time she worked as a secretary supporting the Lab and Mortuary at Tucson Medical Center, a seamstress for our neighborhood, and an administrative assistant supporting School #1 at McGuire AFB. When we transferred to Germany, she volunteered with the Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO) Wives Club to help the Enlisted families adjust to living overseas, was editor of the NCOWC newsletter, served terms as Treasurer and President, and was President of the German/American Club as liaison to the community for the Base Commander. Upon returning to the States, she worked as the bookkeeper for Nichols Auto Department and finished her career working at Equitable Bank of DE/MBNA/BofA.
She loved to garden and had many arts and crafts interests. She taught us to be self-reliant, responsible and strong. She encouraged us to pursue our dreams and to be adventurous. She provided a safe atmosphere during Dad's many long tours of duty ensuring we always had what we needed. She encouraged us to pursue education and taught us how to cook, sew and garden. She encouraged her grand- and great-grandchildren, to read and shared in their interests. She made everyone feel secure with her constant guiding hand. Above all, she loved her family and friends.
She will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery on 11 July at 1 p.m.
