BEAR - Monica S. (Downward) Marcus of Bear passed away Monday, Feb. 5, 2007, in Christiana Health Care, Newark. She was 52.

Mrs. Marcus was born Aug. 4, 1954, in Wilmington, daughter of the late Marcie Downward.

She was a graduate of Christiana High School and worked at several jobs before her illness.

After being diagnosed with sarcoidosis, she rose to the challenge of helping others with this debilitating disease, as well as becoming an advocate for additional research that would benefit others.

Mrs. Marcus was a kind-hearted individual who would always extend a loving hand for those in need. Although she struggled her entire life with numerous challenges, she always managed to find the courage to move forward, while always putting others first.

She was preceded in death by her father who passed away in 1994; and a sister, Katherine Mary Downward in 1950.

She is survived by her husband, William "Bill" Marcus; her mother, Mary Fox of Middletown; a daughter, Maggie Stokes and her husband; a son, Cliff Light; three sisters, Susan Downward of Florida, Denise Daniels of Middletown and Yvette Dyer and her husband, Jim of Wilmington; two brothers, Kurt Downward of Florida and Charles Fox of Middletown; a stepmother, Helen Downward of Florida; seven grandchildren; two very special cats, Stimpy and Shadow; as well as several aunts, uncles, cousins, and many dear friends.

Memorial services will be 11 a.m. today in Red Lion United Methodist Church, 1545 Church Road, Bear.

Arrangements by Daniels & Hutchison Funeral Home LLC, Middletown.
