DOVER - Mildred Elizabeth M. White of Dover died Friday, Dec. 1, 2006, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover.
The Rev. White was born Jan. 29, 1913, in Hurlock, Md., daughter of the late Samuel James and Addie Victoria McGlotten.
She attended Phyllis Wheatley School in Bridgeville, Frederick Douglas School, Seaford. The Rev. White received her high school diploma through distance learning. She earned a teaching certificate from Flora's School of Beauty Culture, Wilmington.
She opened a school and shop in Dover, which was the first school south of Wilmington to be opened by a person of color. She also opened a shop in her parents' home.
The Rev. White became very active in Whatcoat United Methodist Church over the years, having grown up in the church, and held many positions of leadership, including musician, choir leader, lay speaker and lay leader. Beyond the local church, she served as dean of the School of Christian Missions, delegate to United Methodist Women's Assembly, conference secretary for children's work, conference secretary for youth work, conference chair United Methodist Women and jurisdictional chair United Methodist Women.
She was ordained to clergy status in 1953 at Tindley Temple under Bishop Edgar A. Love. She was one of the first women to be ordained by the Delaware Conference of the United Methodist Church. She was appointed to Centennial United Methodist Church, Smyrna, from 1960 to 1965. She retired from the Peninsula Conference in 1965 to return to her beauty culture business.
The Rev. White returned to serve the local church in 1976 and led in music and worship as minister of visitation. She continued to be active in her business until the 1980s, until transitioning into visitation ministry full-time, until her latest illness in September 2006.
The greatly condensed description hardly scratches the surface of the full and fruitful life of a lady who has received honors, awards and acclamation for her wise counsel, ready wit, calm and even temperament, warm hospitality, generosity, forgiving spirit and positive expectation.
She is survived by a son and a daughter-in-law, Charles Cornelius and Diana Elizabeth (Ferguson) White of Los Angeles; a grandson, Charles David White of Los Angeles; her Whatcoat Church family; many relatives in Delaware and Maryland; and many friends in the Northeastern Jurisdiction of the United Methodist Church.
Friends may call from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Friday in Whatcoat United Methodist Church, 341 Salisbury Road, Dover.
Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday in the church where friends may call two hours earlier.
Instead of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to Whatcoat Building Fund, 341 Salisbury Road, Dover, DE 19904.
