DOVER - Michael P. Drass passed away on Monday, May 14, 2018. Mike was born March 15, 1961 in Chester, Pa. to Nicholas L. Drass and the late Ruth Ann Powell Yanonis, he was the second of seven children.
A 1979 graduate of Penncrest High School, where he was in the school district Hall of Fame, he moved on to Mansfield University of Pennsylvania. Mike was a standout football player at Mansfield. He was captain, three-year starter and two-time All-PSAC selection as an offensive lineman. In 2010, he was inducted into the Mansfield Athletic Hall of Fame.
Mike began his coaching career at North Penn High School in Blossburg, Pa. in 1983. Following two seasons as an assistant, he spent two years as the school's head coach before accepting a coaching position at his alma mater, Mansfield. Mike spent two seasons at Mansfield before moving on to begin his storied career at Wesley College in 1989.
After four seasons as the assistant coach and the defensive coordinator, Drass took over as the head coach in March 1993. In the 25 years as head coach of the Wesley football team, Coach Drass tallied 229 wins, 125 All-American honors, 92 ECAC All-Stars, 14 NCAA Playoff Appearances with 29 wins, 12 conference championships, 10 seasons with 10-plus wins, five NCAA Region Championships, a plethora of professional players and two Gagliardi Trophy.
Mike was preceded in death by his mother, and sister Jacqueline Powell Drass.
He is survived by his loving wife of 20 years, Laurie Ann Drass; daughter, Molly Ann Drass; father, Nicholas Drass, wife Naomi, of Glenn Mills, Pa; siblings, Nicolette Lynn Davis, husband John of Media, Pa., Dennis Edward Drass, wife Ginger of White Deer, Pa., Melissa Ann Robertson of Media, Pa., Adam Nicholas Drass-Yanonis, and wife Lisa of Brookhaven, Pa., Nicholas, Jr. "Rocky", and wife Jennifer of Paoli, Pa. and Patricia Jean Stewart of Glen Mills, Pa.; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be held 2 p.m., Saturday May 19 on Drass Field at Scott D. Miller Stadium on N Queen Street. A visitation will be held prior to memorial services from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Torbert Funeral Chapel South, 1145 E. Lebanon Rd (Rt 10), Dover.
In lieu of flowers the family asks contributions be made to the Wesley Football Program, Box B4,120 N State Street, Dover, Delaware 19904.
