Mary Matilda Nichols, 82

GREENSBORO, Md. - Mary Matilda Nichols of Greensboro died Monday, July 9, 2007, in Caroline Home for Hospice, Denton. She was 82.

Mrs. Nichols was born Sept. 9, 1924, in Bethlehem, daughter of the late James Edward and Katie C. Ireland Ross.

She attended Caroline County schools. Upon marring her first husband Nat Cole she moved to Bridgeville, Del., where she resided for 20 years. She moved back to Caroline County making her home in Ridgely.

In 1974 Mrs. Nichols married Wingfield "Tinker" Nichols and resided in Greensboro. For the last two years she has resided in the Caroline Nursing Home due to the death of Wingfield and her failing health.

She was a proud 30-year member of the Caroline Memorial Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7937 Ladies Auxiliary.

Mrs. Nichols took great pride in her family and her many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Wingfield "Tinker" Nichols; five siblings, William "Cracker" Ross, Charles Ross, James Ross, Florence Wooleyhand and Grace Ross.

She is survived by a son, Nathaniel M. Jr. and his wife, Frances Cole of Laurel; a daughter, Grace "Anita" Chance of Greensboro; a stepdaughter, Diane Bradley of Milford, Del.; two grandchildren, Ivan and his wife, Kerri Cheezum of Centreville and Lisa and her husband, Chris Clementson of Laurel, Del.; a step-granddaughter, Kim Larimore of Ridgely; three great-grandchildren, Chris Clementson, Caroline and Kathryn Cheezum; four step-great-grandchildren, D.L. Meredith, Amber Larimore, Michael and Billy Bradley; three children by her sister, Grace, who she raised as her own, Bobby Ross, Marie Jarrell and Tody Stranahan.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in Fleegle and Helfenbein Funeral Home, P.A.

Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday in Fleegle and Helfenbein Funeral Home, Greensboro.

Burial will be in Greenmount Cemetery, Hillsboro.
