Mary L. Melvin, 85
GREENWOOD - Mary L. Melvin went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, Aug. 12, 2007, in Bayhealth-Milford Memorial Hospital. She was 85.
Mrs. Melvin was born in Pennsylvania, daughter of the late William H. Sr. and Mary M. Mervine.
She began working as a bookkeeper for the Mervine Poultry Co., later working as a bookkeeper for Nanticoke Homes, from which she retired.
In her spare time, Mrs. Melvin enjoyed gardening, growing her roses and various flowers. She was a good seamstress and enjoyed sewing. In her younger days, she enjoyed boating and waterskiing.
Most of all, she enjoyed spending time at church. She attended Calvary Wesleyan Church of Harrington, where she was a faithful and devout church attendee since the 1930s. It was there that she met her future husband as a teenager.
While attending Calvary Wesleyan, Mrs. Melvin served as a Sunday school teacher for many years, sang in the choir and also served on the church board. Most recently, she enjoyed coming in on Fridays and stuffing the church bulletins.
Mrs. Melvin was a devoted Christian, a pillar in the church and was an inspiration to all. Her devotion and love that she had for her Lord was very clear by her actions and willingness to give so much of herself to the church.
She will be sadly missed by her family and church family.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Melvin was preceded in death by her brothers, William Harold Mervine Jr. and James Mervine; and a sister, Lula Mae Hatfield
She is survived by her loving husband of 66 years, Carlton Melvin of Greenwood; a son, Kirk M. Melvin of Philadelphia; a daughter and son-in-law, Karen M. and Carroll Young of Rocky Mount, N.C.; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; her brothers, John Mervine of Easton, Md., and Paul Mervine of Brooksville, Fla.; and her sisters, Betty Snyder of Greenwood, Catherine Isaacs of Greenwood, Tootsie Reed of Brooksville, and Joann Collins of Greenwood.
Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday in Calvary Wesleyan Church, Harrington, where friends may visit one hour prior to the service.
Burial will be in St. Johnstown Cemetery, Greenwood.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Calvary Wesleyan Church Missions Fund, 240 Delaware Ave., Harrington, DE 19952.
Arrangements are by the Melvin Funeral Home, Harrington.
