Mary Dorothy Wood Peirson, 86

MIDDLETOWN - Mary Dorothy Wood Peirson of Middletown passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2007, at home. She was 86.

Born on April 8, 1921, in Philadelphia, she was the daughter of the late Mary (Hedderman) and Edgar N. Wood.

Mary was raised by her parents, along with her two brothers, Edgar N. Wood and Dr. Matthew Wood and her sister, Winifred Wood Louis, in Philadelphia, Chicago, and then Chattanooga, Tenn.

Mary attended the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga where she completed double majors in three years to graduate in 1942.

She was the first woman chemist to work at Hercules in Wilmington.

Mary began at Hercules at the beginning of World War II and was terminated four years later when she became pregnant.

Mary and Dave Peirson raised six children in Middletown.

She and Dave were among the first families to help start what is now the MOT Little League.

Mary taught third and fourth grades at St. Paul's Catholic School in Delaware City. She also, with her husband and children, ran the Dairy Queen at St. Georges during the summer months.

Mary then became a real estate saleswoman and broker and with her husband opened Peirwood Realty Co. in Middletown.

In 1974, Mary opened her own real estate office called Mary Peirson Realty where she worked for over 20 years. She also worked for New Castle County in the Housing and Urban Development Division.

Throughout her 63 years in Middletown, Mary was active in her church community at St. Joseph's Catholic Church.

She was active on the Board of Directors of the Corbit Calloway Library in Odessa for which she served as president and was a member of the MOT Chamber of Commerce.

Mary was also a longtime member of the local Business and Professional Women's organization for whom she served as president at one time. She became an active member of the MOT Senior Center and especially enjoyed Bowling Day. Mary was an avid painter and her works are displayed in the homes of all of her children.

Mary is survived by her six children, Mary W. Harris of Middletown, Barbara A. McBride and her husband Carroll of Clayton, David R. Peirson and his wife Barbara of Smyrna, Kathleen D. Adkins and her husband Warren of Bethany Beach, Patricia L. Maichle of Townsend and Donald J. Peirson and his partner Joan Mitchell of Middletown; 15 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

We all celebrate her life!

Mass of Christian burial will be offered 2 p.m. Monday in St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 321 E. Main St., Middletown.

Family and friends may call from noon-1:30 p.m. Monday in the Daniels & Hutchison Funeral Home, 212 N. Broad St., Middletown.

Mary will be laid to rest at Old Drawyer's Cemetery, Odessa.

Friends are invited to celebrate Mary's life at a luncheon immediately following interment at the M.O.T Senior Center, 300 S. Scott St., Middletown.

Memorial donations may be made in Mary's memory to the M.O.T Senior Center, 300 S. Scott Street, Middletown, DE; or to St. Joseph's Catholic Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 630, Middletown, DE 19709-0630.
