The valedictorian of her class of 1942 at Washington College, Chestertown, Md., she became a career educator who influenced generations of students and teachers in both Maryland and Delaware.

Following college graduation, she taught at Havre de Grace High School in Maryland for many years. After marrying Charles Anthony Summers of Milford in 1952, she moved to Milford and began teaching in the Milford School District.

Although Mrs. Summers resigned her position to start a family, she returned to teaching following the sudden death of her husband in 1964. In 1974, she was appointed assistant principal at Milford High School.

Upon retiring in 1984, she became an active volunteer within the Milford community. She served as a Milford Public Library board trustee, chairman of the board for Peoples Place and president of the Milford Memorial Hospital Women"s Auxiliary.

During her retirement, Mrs. Summers played bridge on a regular basis, became a dedicated golfer with the Nine Holers Club, served as a volunteer with the Milford Museum and watched her grandchildren every Friday for 11 years.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Price Stradley; and a sister, Anna Callaway.

She is survived by three sons, Tony Summers of Rehoboth Beach, Bill Summers of Newark and Tom and his wife Debbie Summers of Magnolia; three grandchildren, Ricky, Jordan and Hannah; a niece and her husband, June and Jeff Allen of Wyoming; three nephews and their wives, Ken and Shirley Callaway of Summit, N.J., Wayne and Jackie Callaway of Washington, and Roger and Helen Stradley of Granville, Ohio.
