Marie Agnes Courtemanche Cook resident of Delaware Veterans Home for eight years died Sunday, April 11, 2021 of pneumonia.
Marie was born June 10, 1922 in Somerville, Mass., the daughter of the late Wilford W. and Beatrice E. (Ledoux) Courtemanche. She attended St Patrick's grade school in Brockton, Mass. and graduated from Brockton High School in 1939.
In 1940 Marie was employed as a secretary/receptionist at Temple Israel in Brockton for four years. She was active in the Brocktonian Duck Pin League, enjoyed baseball games, attending several Boston Red Sox games at Fenway Park. She was an active reader and enjoyed card playing as well as other games. She began to collect stamps both American and Foreign.
Marie joined the Navy in 1944. She went to Hunter College in Bronx, N.Y., followed by the Naval Postal School at Sampson, N.Y. and then a permanent Duty Station at the Fleet Post Office in Boston, Mass. She finished her assignment time at the Chelsea Naval Hospital post office, before honorably discharged in 1946.
Marie married Robert Calvin Cook, 3rd class of the U.S. Navy on February 23, 1946 at the Naval Hospital Chapel in Chelsea, Mass. She and Robert celebrated their 70th anniversary in 2016 before Robert passed.
Marie was active in Ten Pin Bowling and Square Dancing. She enjoyed making large picture puzzles, scrap books and photograph albums of all the trips that she and her husband enjoyed. She also continued to add to her stamp collecting albums, including post cards and First Day covers until her passing. Marie was a member of the Newport, R.I. Stamp Club, American Bowling Congress and an Auxiliary member of the American Battleship Association.
In 1955 Marie went to work for Federal Civil Service in El Centro, Calif. finishing her 20 years of Civil Service in Middletown, R.I.
After her marriage Marie and her husband added three sons to their family moving to various states to which her husband received duty assignments including Hawaii and Alaska before becoming states.
In retirement Marie and Bob moved to Glendale, Ariz. where they lived and traveled U.S., Canada, Mexico and Europe. In 2007 they moved to Dover, Del. to be close to son David and his wife Elaine.
In addition to her parents; she was predeceased by husband, Robert; brothers, Robert, John, and Albert Courtemanche; and sisters, Doris Courtemanche, Sylvia Coy and Dorothy Campbell; sons, David W. Cook of Dover and Paul R. Cook of Matthews, N.C. She is survived by her son, Bruce E. Cook and wife Bonnie, David's wife Elaine who was also her caregiver for many years, and Gail Cook wife of Paul; eight grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; and five great great grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian rite will be held 10 a.m., Tuesday, April 20, 2021 at Holy Cross Church, 641 S. State Street, Dover, with interment at Arlington National Cemetery with her husband at a later date.
