L. Everett Marvel

EASTON - L. Everett Marvel, a retired postmaster of Easton, Md. died at Bayleigh Chase (formerly William Hill Manor). Born in Easton, Md. on Dec. 5, 1916, he was the son of Luther P. and Martha Stevens Marvel. A year after graduating from Easton High School in 1932, he opened a grocery, meats and produce market at 415 Goldsborough Street. Three years later he joined the U.S. Postal Service. In March of 1943, he was inducted into the U.S. Army and served as second in command of A. P. O. 380 for 30 months, in the North African and European theatres. A.P.O. 380 was the post office for the U.S. Army's 36th General Hospital during World War II. He returned to the Easton Post Office in Dec. of 1945 after his release from active duty. In his 32 years with the Postal Service, he was a parcel post deliveryman, city letter carrier, window clerk, money order clerk, night foreman, superintendent of mails, and finally the Postmaster. He retired Jan. 6, 1972. A member of the First Baptist Church of Easton, he served as Sunday School Superintendent for 28 years, served on the Board of Deacons for several terms and was chairman of the Board of Deacons when the present church was dedicated. He was a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows Lodge #18, E. E. Streets Memorial Post #5118 Veterans of Foreign Wars, B.P.O. Elks #1622 of Easton and the Loyal Order of Moose #1520. Everett had a life-long passion for ballroom dancing. Starting in his 20's and continuing into his 90's. He and his wife Martha took dance lessons gave dance lessons and they belonged to 3 local dance clubs. Everett was predeceased by his wife, the former Martha Butler, whom he married in Sept. 1939, a son, Robert A. Marvel and his sister, Virginia M. Langrell. He is survived by a son, Donald E. Marvel and wife Carol of Easton, Md., and a daughter, Wanda Marvel-Ransom and husband Jim of Frederick, Md., five grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Everett will be remembered by his best friend, Jane Pogue, his family, all of his wonderful friends and the caring staff at William Hill Manor. A celebration of life will be held on July 25, 2015 at 11 a.m. at the Bayleigh Chase Auditorium formerly William Hill Manor. There will be a private burial at Woodlawn Memorial Park, Ocean Gateway, Easton, Md. Memorial donations may be made in lieu of flowers to the First Baptist Church, Idlewild Avenue and Hanson Street, Easton, Md. 21601 or a charity of your choice.
