Katherine Sophia Waterfield, 84

CHESTERTOWN, Md. - Katherine Sophia Waterfield of Chestertown, Md. died Thursday, May 17, 2007, in Chestertown, Md. She was 84.

Mrs. Waterfield was born in Baltimore on Sept. 13, 1922, the daughter of the late Thomas Nicholas and Margaret Nicholas.

Mrs. Waterfield worked as a cook for the Rock Hall Inn. She was a member of Post 18-American Legion Ladies Auxiliary for over 38 years. She was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Waterloo, Iowa and a former member of Ducks Unlimited.

She enjoyed watching poker on television and bird watching. She was very involved in collecting and trading decoys.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Waterfield was preceded in death by her husband, Amos Waterfield; one daughter, Grace Hirth; and one son, Bud Shaffer.

She is survived by a son, Earl Shaffer of Chestertown, Md.; a daughter, Kate Gibson of Charlottesville, Va.; one sister, Margaret Thompson and her husband, Earnest of Baltimore; nine grandchildren, Grace Morris and her husband, Steve of Church Hill, Md., Shirley McPeek and her husband, Bobby of Branchville, N.J., Diana Krusmark and her husband, Carey of Iowa, Charles Gerlack and his wife, Donna Bottenfield of Va., Thomas Gerlack of Va., Bo Shaffer of Charlottesville, Va., Kathy Shaffer of Stanton, Va., and Sonia Moores of Waynesboro, Va., and John Shaffer, formerly of Baltimore and 19 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 1-3 p.m. at the Fellows Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, 130 Speer Road, Chestertown, Md.
