LAUREL - John Roland Shockley of Laurel passed away Sunday, April 15, 2007, in his home surrounded by his family. He was 81.
Mr. Shockley was born Jan. 26, 1926, in Bishopville, Md., son of the late Walter and Katie (Duncan) Shockley.
His family moved to Wilmington when he was 11, where he obtained his education at P.S. DuPont High School and Brown Vocational School.
He proudly served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, spending most of his time on the Destroyer U.S.S. Barry APD 29. When it was attacked by Japanese Kamikazes off the Island of Okinawa, Japan, he and most of his shipmates were rescued from the seas.
Mr. Shockley later worked for Ralston Purina Co. in Wilmington and Delmar until an accident in 1966 left him disabled. He later enjoyed refinishing furniture and caning, sometimes teaching students at local schools.
He was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church and American Legion Post 19 in Laurel. For many years he was active in the Kiwanis Club and received the Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Citizen Award in 1974 for his part in converting the old Waller Theatre into a community youth center.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Dennis L. Shockley Jr.; and two brothers, Walter Forrest Shockley and Gilbert E. Shockley.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Eva W. Shockley; a son and a daughter-in-law, Dennis L. and Sharon K. Shockley of Laurel; a grandson, Christopher Shockley of Laurel; two great-grandchildren, Dylan C. Shockley and Cassidy A. Shockley, both of Laurel; and a brother, Paul Shockley of Somers, Wis.; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday in Centenary United Methodist Church, 200 W. Market St., Laurel, where friends may call one hour earlier. The Rev. John Van Tine will officiate.
Burial will follow in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Laurel.
Instead of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer's Association, 2306 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington, DE 19980; or Centenary U.M. Church, 200 W. Market St., Laurel, DE 19956.
Arrangements by the Hannigan, Short, Disharoon Funeral Home 700 West St., Laurel.
