Retired U.S. Air Force Maj. John McParlin, 86
DOVER - Retired U.S. Air Force Maj. John McParlin of Dover died Thursday, Aug. 23, 2007, in Bayhealth-Milford Memorial Hospital. He was 86.
Mr. McParlin was born March 15, 1921, in Pawtucket, R.I., to the late John and Marie (Lambert) McParlin.
Mr. McParlin joined the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1942; he went to officer training school and in 1946 he was discharged as a first lieutenant.
He served two years in the reserves. In 1948 he returned to active duty in the U.S. Air Force, and he retired as a major in 1964.
Mr. McParlin spent many hours after retiring volunteering for various organizations. He volunteered at the Dover Air Force Base BRAVO office, counseling on retirement benefits, also at the base pharmacy dispensing medications and Eldercare information services and as a medical transport driver for the American Cancer Society. Mr. McParlin also volunteered at the KSI picnics and Special Olympic events.
Mr. McParlin enjoyed traveling, museums and visiting historical places. He enjoyed quiet pleasures like reading, movies, cards, bowling and wood working.
He was a very loving and caring man and will be missed by many.
Mr. McParlin is survived by his five children, Sue Klindienst and her husband John Sisson, Sandra Brooks and her husband Jeff, Sheila McDonald and her husband Joe, Norma Sorel and her husband Joe, and John McParlin and his wife Julie; 13 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Saturday in Torbert Funeral Chapel South, 1145 E. Lebanon Road, Dover.
