HARRINGTON - John M. "Jack" Short, Jr. passed away at home on Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2018. He was born on a farm near Little Masten Corner in 1929 to Madalene and John M. Short, Sr.
Jack was a U.S. Air Force and U.S. Army veteran. He also worked for the State of Delaware Highway Dept. for thirty years, retiring in 1980.
Jack enjoyed junking more than anything and collecting antique toys as well as fixing pedal tractors. He was a member of the Lions Club of Harrington, serving as President three times; the American Legion of Harrington; VFW Commander of the year #6483 in Milford, as well as State Commander; Honorary Director of the Delaware Agricultural Museum in Dover; member of the Harrington Historical Society; Moose Lodge of Harrington; Delaware State Fair director for 47 years currently serving as first Vice President of the Executive board; Harrington Raceway for 12 years; Harrington Senior Center; Milford Senior Center; Antique Tractor Club of Greenwood; and a member of the Calvary Wesleyan Church, Harrington.
In addition to his parents, he was proceeded in death by his loving wife of 65 years, Betsy Short.
He is survived by his daughter, Joanne (Steve) Moore; son, John "Cookie" Short and his special companion and friend Bobbie; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and sister Jean Wyatt.
Memorial services will take place at Melvin Funeral Home, 15522 South DuPont Hwy, Harrington, DE 19952, on Friday, Nov. 9, 2018, at 6 p.m., with a visitation for family and friends two hours prior. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to: Calvary Wesleyan Church, 240 Delaware Ave., Harrington, DE 19952.
