John H. "Johnny" "Uncle Johnny" Cannon, 83

BRIDGEVILLE - John H. "Johnny" "Uncle Johnny" Cannon of Bridgeville passed away Saturday, Aug., 11, 2007, at the Seaford Retirement Center, after a brief illness. He was 83.

Mr. Cannon was the son of the late Harlan "Cannonball" and Daisey (Rideout) Cannon.

He received his education at the former Trinity School in Dublin Hill, and served his country faithfully as a member of the U.S. Army.

After receiving and honorable discharge, Mr. Cannon returned home to Bridgeville.

Prior to his retirement, he worked for many years at Adams Feed Mill in Bridgeville, and for the former Lester C. Newton Trucking Co., also formerly of Bridgeville, as a truck driver.

Mr. Cannon retired as a truck driver from the Wilmington Waste Co.

At an early age, he became a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Bridgeville.

Mr. Cannon was an avid fox and rabbit hunter. He raised and trained dogs for hunting, and his dogs were always in demand. Mr. Cannon held very few conversations in which he did not brag about the conquests and accomplishments of his fox dogs and his beagles.

In addition to hunting, he got great pleasure from attending and watching horse races.

Mr. Cannon was a dedicated and loving father, brother and uncle.

His dry sense of humor could make you laugh for hours, and he had nicknames for everyone, regardless of their stature in life.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Pastor Barbara Jackson Cannon; his sisters, Geneva "Minky" Skinner and Sara Cannon; and a nephew, Thomas "Tom" Cannon.

He is survived by one daughter, Henrietta Watson of Milton and her husband, Morris; one grandson, Henri Blake of Millsboro; two sisters, Catherine Burbage of Bridgeville, and Cleo and her husband, Frederick Nichols of Seaford; two great-grandchildren, Andre Sheppard and Sherral Blake; four great-great-grandchildren; one stepdaughter, Deborah and husband, Bruce Hudson of Frederica; one step-granddaughter, whom he raised, Coretta and husband, Howard "Petey" Neal of Bridgeville; three step-great-grandchildren, Tisha Neal, NaToya Neal and NaCoya Neal; he considered all of his nieces and nephews to be his children, they are, Sandy, LaVerne, Patricia, Tami, Shai, Lorraine and her husband Leon, Nelson, Lamont, Charles, Bill, Jerry, Larry, Andre, Delphine, Gerri, Charlene, Brenda, Janice, Regina, Veronica, Deirdre, Loretta "Petey," Yvette, Richard, Merle, Fred "Wayne," Khansa and Tonya; his special devoted friends of many years, Kathleen Copeland, Steve Prettyman, Maurice Lively, Ronnie and Ida Mae Kefauver, Mr. Bipp, and Danny Cain; as well as a host of other family members and friends.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. Friday in Trinity United Methodist Church on Dublin Hill Road, Bridgeville.

Funeral services will be noon at the church, where the Rev. Baron Hopkins Sr. will deliver the eulogy.

Interment will be in the Trinity Church Cemetery.
