SMYRNA - John D. "Jack" Heverin Jr., of Smyrna, passed away at home Tuesday, March 18, 2008. He was 83.
Mr. Heverin was born April 18, 1924, in Townsend, the son of the late David J. and Agnes Connor Heverin.
Mr. Heverin worked as an automotive assemblyman for Chrysler in Newark for 30 years before retirement.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8801 in Smyrna and the American Legion David C. Harrison Post 14, also in Smyrna.
Mr. Heverin loved to wheel and deal and was a whiz at repairing lawn mowers.
He enjoyed the annual Fourth of July lawn mower races in Smyrna, playing the banjo, repairing bicycles for the area children, at no cost, yard sales, auctions, the Philadelphia Phillies baseball team and his family.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Semans Heverin; and two sisters, Louise Archer and Elva Mae Gardner.
He is survived by a son, John D. Heverin III and his wife Shirley of Smyrna; two grandsons, John D. Heverin IV and his wife Tracy of Clayton and Matthew Heverin and his wife Vicki of Smyrna; four great-grandchildren, J.D. Heverin V of Clayton and Stephanie, Brooke and David Heverin, all of Smyrna; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Services will be noon Saturday in the Faries Funeral Chapel, 29 S. Main St., Smyrna, where friends may call one hour prior to the services.
Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery, Smyrna.
Instead of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to V.F.W. Post 8801, 4941 Wheatleys Pond Road, Smyrna, DE 19977; or the American Legion David C. Harrison Post 14, P.O. Box 345, Smyrna, DE 19977.
