DENTON, Md. - John C. Palmer of Denton died Sunday, July 22, 2007, in the Caroline Home for Hospice, Denton. He was 73.

Known as Jack, Mr. Palmer was born on Aug. 24, 1933, in Lewes, son of the late Walter B. Palmer Sr. and Myrtle Rebecca Coates Palmer Harper. He was a 1951 graduate of the Caroline High School in Denton and was a graduate of Washington College in Chestertown. In October of 1955, he married his wife, Margaret K. Palmer, who resides in Denton.

Mr. Palmer was in the Maryland National Guard for 12 years. He worked for and eventually owned and operated the family business, Soil Service, in Oil City near Denton, retiring in 2000. He had belonged to the Denton Rotary Club for many years and was a Past President of both the Caroline Country Club and the Denton Volunteer Fire Co. In addition to his family and friends, he had two loves. One was St. Luke"s United Methodist Church in Denton where he sang in the choir and held many offices over the years, and the other was playing golf.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Palmer is survived by one daughter, Linda P. Myers of Forest Hill; one brother, R. Dale Palmer Sr. of Denton; two grandchildren, Emily C. Myers and Adam Myers; and three nephews and two nieces. He was predeceased by one daughter, Paula Jean Palmer on Oct. 15, 1973 and one brother, Walter B. Palmer Jr.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the St. Luke"s United Methodist Church at Fifth Avenue and Franklin Street in Denton, where friends may call from 6 until 8 p.m. Friday and also one hour prior to the service on Saturday. The interment will be in the Denton Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests sending memorial donations to the St. Luke"s United Methodist Church, PO Box 66, Denton, MD 21629 or to the Caroline Home for Hospice, PO Box 362, Denton, MD 21629.
