Joan S. Schwartz, 78

MILFORD - Joan S. Schwartz, passed away Wednesday, June 10, 2009, in Delmar Nursing Home, Delmar. She was 78. Mrs. Schwartz was born on April 23, 1931 in Wilkesboro, Pa., daughter of the late Leo A. and Stella (Wisniewski) Makowski. She was employed by Milford Memorial Hospital as a switchboard operator for 15 years, retiring in 1991. Joan was a member of the St. John's Catholic Church in Milford. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John C. Schwartz in 1994; and a brother, Clement J. Makowski. She is survived by two brothers, Leo B. Makowski of Ireland, and Augstin J. Makowski of Philadelphia, Pa.; three sisters, Mary M. Makowski of Hampton, Va., Brona Jones and her husband Norris of Williamsburg, Va., and Catherine Makowski of Hampton, Va.; several nieces and nephews; and great-nieces and nephews. Services were 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 16, 2009 at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery Chapel, 2465 Chesapeake City Rd., Bear. Burial followed in the adjoining cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorial contributions to the American Heart Association of Sussex and Kent County, 1019 Mattland Way, Milford, DE 19963.
