MILFORD - Jennie Mae "Betty" (Parker) Griffin of Milford went home peacefully Friday, Sept. 14, 2007, surrounded by her family and friends at home. She was 79.
Betty was born the eighth child to the late Charles Sr. and Mable Parker, on Nov. 7, 1927.
She attended the Milford School No. 2 for nine years and graduated third in her class. Betty also attended Booker T. She entered her first year of college at the early age of 16, attending Morgan State College, now Morgan State University, earning her bachelor"s degree in English, and later returned to Delaware State College, now Delaware State University, to earn her A.B. degree in elementary Education.
Betty taught in all three Delaware counties, retiring in 1991 from the Capital School District (Fairview Elementary School, fourth grade, in Dover).
She gave her life to Christ at the age of 12 and joined Bethel AME Church under the leadership of the late John Whalen Sr. Betty was very active in her church. Betty loved her church, church family, eating and going to the Milford bowling lanes every week.
She was the perfect example of an unsung hero, for which she received an award from her church.
Betty loved to volunteer her services and had no problem doing anything for anybody. She took it upon herself to provide transportation to the students who had no way back and forth to school. She would even take the members shopping, on doctor appointments or wherever they needed to go.
Betty was a member of other organizations such as Phi Delta Kappa Sorority, Alpha Phi Chapter, advisor of the Kudos group (high school boys) and was a member of the NAACP. She has been an ombudsman at the Milford Senior Center for four years and assisted with living wills.
