Herbert E. 'Mac' McClary, 85 SMYRNA - Herbert E. "Mac" McClary, 85, of Smyrna, died Sunday, May 2, 2010, at Silver Lake Center in Dover, surrounded by his loving family. Herb was born in Salem, N.H., and served in the Navy in the Pacific on a USS.LCSL during World War II, transferred to the Air Force after the war, did a tour in Vietnam in 1963, and served in the U.S. Air Force until he retired in 1965 at Dover AFB. While in Vietnam he organized a little league baseball team for Vietnamese children. He founded McClary Floor Covering in 1974 and retired in 1992 the business closed in 2003. Herb was a boy scout and assistant scoutmaster in 1947 in his hometown of Salem, NH. He held many offices in Fox Post #2 American Legion in Dover, including Post Commander in 1962. He was also chairman of the Legion baseball in 1965, 1966 & 1967. Herb was very active in the community during his life in Delaware, volunteering at the Dover Air Force Base at the U.S.O. and the Air Museum. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Barbara M. McClary of Smyrna; daughter, Gail L. Lewis and her husband David A. of Dover; brother, Carlton McClary of Cincinnati, Ohio; sister, Phyllis Ross and her husband Eddie of Exeter, N.H.; sister, Connie Stone died in 1953; sister, Roberta Ingram died recently on April 16, 2010, survived by her husband Russell of Salem, N.H.; grandchildren, Kelly R. Cristiano and her husband Matthew of Warwick, Md., and Michelle J. Wheeler of Greenwood; great- grandchildren, Giovanni Cristiano and Joel Wheeler. Service will be 8 p.m., Wednesday, May 5, at Pippin Funeral Home, 119 W. Camden-Wyoming Ave., Wyoming, where friends may gather two hours earlier. Burial with full military honors will be 11 a.m., Thursday, May 6, at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Rd., Bear. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Dover AFB Museum Foundation, 1301 Heritage Road, Dover AFB, DE 19902. Letters of condolences can be sent via www.pippinfuneralhome.com.
