GREENSBORO, Md. - George H. Smith of Greensboro died peacefully Monday, March 19, 2007, in the Caroline Home for Hospice in Denton, Md. with his wife of 60 years by his side. He was 84.

He was born June 13, 1922, in Denton to the late James and Guyla Smith.

Mr. Smith, a lifetime resident of Caroline County, owned and operated his own auto repair garage.

He was a World War II Army veteran serving in the 30th Infantry for three years. He fought at the Battle of the Bulge and was the one-millionth service person to be discharged from the armed services.

He was a life member of the Caroline Memorial Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7937.

He enjoyed working in his garage, visiting with friends and gardening. He always had a good story to tell.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Pauline Butler; and brother, Clarence Smith.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Agnes Cahall Smith; two sons, Kenneth and his wife, Nancy Smith of Milford and Richard "Dickie" Smith and his girlfriend, Paulette Kilmon of Burrsville, Md.; five grandchildren, Sherry and Hollie Robbins of Vienna, Md., Tammy Willis and Jeff Layton of Denton, Greg and Whitney Smith of Elkton, Mark Smith and Angie Rosebrock and Scott and Crystal Robinson all of Greensboro; and eight great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in Fleegle and Helfenbein Funeral Home, Greensboro.

Interment will be private.

Instead of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Caroline Hospice Foundation, PO Box 362, Denton, MD 21629.
