Genevia Layne Daniels
April 11, 1944 – June 5, 2023
Genevia was born in Pike County, Kentucky and was one of ten children born to Ida and Hulen Layne. She was a coal miners daughter raised on tomato sandwiches, sunshine, and mountain air. At the tender age of 17 she married her life partner, John Daniels. Together they started an adventure that would last for more than 60 years. From running moonshine to raising three daughters, their life was never dull. She worked side by side her husband while building their construction company. She loved designing houses and it was said she could swing a hammer better than most men.
Genevia was proud of her mountain heritage and spent many hours researching the family history. She would share her latest find with anyone who would listen. She was a lover of nature and could often be found wandering the woods behind her home, admiring her beautiful flower gardens, and looking for sassafras. There was never a wild animal that went hungry.
Genevia had many hobbies. She enjoyed a good jigsaw puzzle, making candy at Christmas and loved a good banana pudding. Sewing was a favorite pastime. She took great joy in making quilts for family members and has a quilt displayed at the Big Sandy Heritage Center in Pikeville, Kentucky.
She is survived by her three daughters, Jowana Lamb (son-in-law, Terry), Melinda Daniels and Alfreda Daniels; her five grandchildren, Jason Daniels (granddaughter-in-law, Melissa), Jamie Daniels, Jennafer Lamb, Tracy Lamb and Jordan Phillippi (granddaughter-in-law, Christy). She is survived by ten great grandchildren and one great, great grandchild.
We knew the day would come when her mommy and daddy would take her home. And so, the day has come when we all say goodbye. We know she will be waiting for each one of us too… probably shouting in her deeply southern voice – smiling and filled with the energy of someone who truly enjoyed the little things in life.
Mom, your life was a blessing, your memory a treasure. You are loved beyond words and missed beyond measure.
